First of all, I love the livery yard I am currently at. The facilities and people there are brilliant, and I would recommend it to anyone:)

The only downside is that we have to drive for an hour to get there and an hour to get back again. This costs is a small fortune in petrol, and ups the mileage considerably, which may impact on the cost of insurance in the long run. Also, it cuts into the amount of time I have to do any riding, since we have work and home commitments too:(

So I have heard of a space having opened on a yard much closer to us, with similar facilities and around the same price. We are going to view it on Friday. But we both feel really sad and guilty at considering leaving where we are. It is just down to how far we are having to travel.

Providing this other yard is suitable, should we take the plunge? And if so, what is the best way to let our current yard owner know? Obviously, I would give the thirty day notice, but I don't want to offend them or hurt their feelings either. Thinking we might get them a present to thank them for everything as well.

I would offer you all cookies, but I've eaten them:oWill Jaffa cakes do?

Assuming the yards are pretty equal then I must admit I would move in a flash! Even if you are only visiting once a day it must cost an absolute mint!
Just be straight with your current yo. If you like the nearer yard and intend to move, then just have a quiet chat with your yo and say that as much as you love the yard, the long drive is just costing too much in terms of time and money. I'm sure a present would be much appreciated if you would like to, that and maybe a thank you note?

Yes, all being equal, we are probably going to move!
Am definitely getting our current yard owner a present and a thank you note, and I would tell them in person about moving.
But I won't decide for certain until we have viewed on Friday.

Agree with others, if the yard is suitable then I would def move. I am sure your YO will totally understand your reasons for leaving as that is a long way to go. Let us know how you get on :)

Driving for an hour to get there!

Speaking as a YO having a client leave to go somewhere closer to home is a reason that makes a huge amount of sense and certainly doesn't cause any hard feelings. In your place I would certainly be doing the same.

Just give your months notice or whatever it states in your contract, if you have no contract, the general rule of thumb is that if you pay monthly give a month, if you pay fortnightly give a fortnights notice.

Its is really hard, especially if you ar ehappy where you are. I have moved twice for practicle reasons over the years, and have cried both times I have told the YO!!

I would make sure things are fine at the new place, then speak to the YO and tell them of your intentions, and give them notice in writing. Have fun with all the spare time you'll have!!
