a few questions for those with horses above 17hh? F

First how tall are you , and whats your weight?

How big is your horse? And what breed are they?

And do you have problems finding headcollers, bridles, rugs ect to fit?

Thanks in advance :)

(pictures would also be nice :o )

My horse is a 17.1 (and a half) ID x TB... and I'm 5'11 (and a half ;))

*Prepares to get pounced on* I weigh just under 16 stone (and losing). I don't, however, feel that I'm too heavy for my horse and will ignore anyone that says I am. :D No, it's not ideal but as I say I'm losing the weight, I think I look ok on him, he carries me fine. Yes it will be better for him when I weigh less, but I'm never going to be skinny... doubt I'll ever even manage 12 stone to be honest - if/when I make 14 I will be ecstatic.

Judge for yourself (not the best pic of him working/me riding but other than ones I have in my sig this is the only one I have handy right now)

Rugs are fine because he actually only takes a 7' rug. Headcollars are tricky as they're normally too tight on the throat lash (is that what you call it on a headcollar?!) so I have to use the cottage craft fully adjustable one in XF.

Bridles are ok, has to be XF. Only difficulty I've had is getting a drop noseband for him - having to have one specially made as couldn't get one to fit otherwise. He takes a 6" bit as well so happily just in the 'normal' range of that.

Him standing up (please ignore state of front foot - he'd pulled a shoe off this day )

Our latest arrival at livery is a 17.2 ex-steeplechaser.
His current riders, sharing, are respectively:

5ft 6 (11 stone) and
5.4 (13 stone)

He is using my old showjumping saddle, with appropriate numnahs and gel pads to fill the hollows beihind his withers. He is quite short backed so rugs are not a huge problem - he's unrugged at present but we've measured him and 6'9" fits nicely. He has legs the length of palm trees, so the main problem for his winter rugs (he'll be living out) will be to get rugs with sufficient depth to cover him down to near the knee and hock - and they will almost certainly be Mark Todd rugs, which are very generous on depth.

Normal horse headcollars fit him OK as he is fine muzzled, and his feet are size 5 so no shoeing problems.

Can't remember if you had other queries, but inour case, so far, so good.

My lad is 17-3hh, my height is 5ft 8, my weight is going down but is still too heavy luckily diet is going okay. Captain is a KWPN Gelderlander, a type of WB. Not problems with rugs, in 7ft rugs, but not a wide horse so no real probs getting a rug, bridles/ head collars or saddles. However boots can be a problem.

I'm 5ft 10 and 11 1/2 stone.

My horse is 17.3hh and a KWPN.

Headcollar was fine but his bridle is made to measure because we couldn't find one big enough, rugs he is ok because he is fairly narrow but his butt does hang out of most rugs because he is so long, boots don't fit we bought an XXL pair of brushing boots and they wouldn't do up. He also doesn't fit into our trailer.

With my mum who is 5ft 8

Our shire x was sold to us as 16.3hh but we think he's probably nearer 17hh. I'm 5'6" and weigh 80kg (not sure what that is in stones).

He's not a normal size in anything!

Rugs - he has a 7'3" premier equine lightweight and a 7'3" 100g turnout from the big horse shop (brilliant website). Other than that we tend not to rug him.

Headcollar - he has a XF leather one which fits him well.

Bridle - as above, it was the bit that was difficult, he takes a size that no place normally sells, had to buy him a ex-military fulmer snaffle off eBay!

My big lad is going to make 17hh and is already in 7 foot rugs. He uses XXfull bridles! I have him in a treeless saddle. He came with a gigantic headcollar which I hope to never have to replace! He is unshod and I'm going to try and avoid shoeing as he will need whopping great shoes and the concussion wouldn't please me. HoPe I can find boots in his size!! I am 5'5 and didn't intend on having such a big horse it's just turned out this way. He is Flemish and has over 12 inches of bone, a real mans hunter type. I am over weight but losing weight and ride him accordingly.

17'2 warmblood... I am 174 cm and 80 kg... No idea what that is in old money :)
Tack no problem as he has a fine head and medium saddle fit. Only problem is saddlecloths for an 18 inch saddle :)

17hh ID, with a tiny bit of TB in there :)

I'm 5'7" and about 12 stone D: (dieting) lol

She wears 6 foot 6 to 6 foot 9 rugs depending on make, 17 1/2 inch medium to wide fit saddle, and full size everything else. Never had a problem getting things to fit, off the peg is fine.

She's the black in my sig :)

I'm 5.8 and weigh about 10 stone, my boy is a 17.2 TB. A 7.3 rug and a full sized headcollar is fine for him but his bridle is made to measure.

I always think other horses are tiny now i'm so used to his tallness!

speaking of massive - i did not realise picture would come out so huge! Whoops!

My boys virtually 17hh, he takes a wb size bridle but has a xf noseband and a 6 and a half bit. He takes 6.9 to 7ft rugs, xf boots and overreachs just about fit him and has 11 inches of bone and huge unshod feet. He's a normandy cob (possibly a x as he's taller than the breed normally is)
I'm 5'11 and weigh 16 stone

my share horse is 17.1 ex steeplechaser. short backed and fine TB head so bridles/headcollars normal full size. bit is 5" so thats small. rugs 6'6 so fine. saddle fine once found one to accomodate withers. boots are alse fine although back bryshing boots are an issue use fetlocks instead.
im 5'6 just and weigh 9 and half stone.

i've got a 17.2hh IDx.
when i bought him i weighed only 8stone, people said he won't even feel me on his back and will try and squish thinking i'm a fly! he never put a foot out of place though.

i'm 5'8 and now weigh about 12 stone, can't ride him anymore as he's retired but my kids ride him with ease. they are 5'2, about 5 stone and my 6yr old son who is a little squirt! :D never once had any problems with him doing anything that is asked of him and he adapts to his rider.

as for tack i don't have the problems alot of people do but then that could be because i'm not fussy about any of it as only done hacking on him! he fits an XF bridle and headcollar (unless the make is generous with sizes). his rugs are either 7' or 7'3".
the worst problem i had was trying to buy an exercise sheet, both flourescent and ordinary.

17 hands Belgium warmblood takes 7'0 rugs can sometimes get away with 6'9. He has a massive head and his bridles always look to small! I'm 5'4 and 9.5 stone and on slimfast! :D

At one time had an 18.1hh ID X heavyweight show hunter. Had a 7'3" rug, everything else had to be made for him, including shoes and trailer! I am 5'9" and weigh 10 1/2 stone. Also had to bring mounting block (tall bucket, actually) EVERYWHERE, as couldn't get anywhere near the stirrup from the ground.

im 5'3'' i think and weigh 8 stone, we have 3 TB's in at the moment over 17hh (one would have to be verging on 18hh). We had a couple more last year that might be coming back too. We have just sent an 17hh+ irish draught home too.
We dont have any problems with rugs or tack fitting, in fact the larger sizes are usually cheaper if fulls dont fit.

I have a 17.1 TB (ex chaser), I'm 5'4'' and weigh 10st 2. He's wearing a cobsize headcollar and bridle, full size everything else. Rugs, depends on brand, I find John Whitaker and Weatherbeeta fit him lovely (he's a 6'9''- 7'0'').

Thanks for all the replys, just as we have seen a nice looking 17.3hh for sale ,
and i wanted to know the average , hight - weigh to horse size ratio .
I am 5ft 6 and eight stone, so i was thinking i may be too small.
But now im more thinking , if the horse is right my size won't matter ,
of course only if its a sane normal horse (:

Thanks again :)

I used to have a 17h (high withered) ex racer, I'm 5ft4" and weigh about 8st 9.
Yes, I looked like a pea on a mountain but never had any trouble with stuff fitting him :)

taz is 17.2hh

i am 5'3ft :) weigh 9.5 stone :)

taz is an ISH he takes a 6'3 -6'6 rug (very short backed)

he takes a full size head collar and an full - x-full bridle :)

hes the chestnut in my siggy :) thats me riding him - always wondered if i looked like a pea on a pigs ass :o

My Belgium Warmblood is 17.2. Im 5ft5 and weigh 12 stone. I didn't intend on a big horse, we fell into each other laps! He takes 7ft rugs and I have found the bigger the horse, the softer the temperament in my opinion. I do find him alot to manouver around in a school though.

I have an 18.2 Percheron and I'm 5'9 and about 9 stone. I look tiny on him but love riding him so really don't care. He is 3xl in all headwear so that comes from Canada and his 7.5" bit is made to measure. Rugs are 7'6 with a chest expander. His shoes are made to measure but don't cost that much more than normal. I wouldn't change him for anything!

17.1 and I am 5 feet 1 and about 8 stone 2. Fitting things aren't a problem, he takes 6 feet 9 or 7 feet rugs and the only special size I have to get are extra wide browbands. I personally think people make too much of a fuss about "big horses". To be honest, 17.2 is a pretty standard horse size. But then I've always been taught just to get on with riding whats there.

My lads 17'1 Part Hannovarian, I'm 5'3 weight 9-9 1/2 stone. So basically not much of me for how big he is! we get on fine though :) don't think I would have ever gone looking for such a big horse but he sort of found me!

Takes a 6'9 rug and full size things fit him fine

Meet Ethel. she's over 18hh. 16yrs old, out of a rescue mare who was 15hh and a colour stallion Matchmaker who I don't think was much bigger. Ethel was supposed to be coloured but the white bits went missing! Her full brother (Norman) is a lovely piebald and nearly as big. . I'm 5ft 6 (i think) and weight is not to be discussed but its a lot more than I would like it to be. I'm not blessed in the long legged department but feel safe as houses on Ethel:D

Rugs are 7ft 3 to 7ft 6 and need to be generous as she's deep barrelled and big shouldered. Head collars - the biggest you can find at the time. Bridle - yep big! Boots anything that is large as she's long in the bone and due to an ability to self harm has one front leg that's a bit lumpy.

My Big lad is an 18.1hh British Warmblood.....I'm just a smidge under 5'10 and I'm heavier than I'd like to be (usually around 11 stone but at the moment I've wavering around 13!!!!) but am working on losing the extra weight.

He takes an extra full bridle, 7'3 or 7' rugs depending on what make they are, 6" bit and made to measure shoes.

Love the name, love the horse!!

my girl is 17.1hh TBx, i'm about 5'6'' and wobble between 10 to 10.5 stone. I don't feel small riding her but getting off when you have that moment of freefall before your feet find the ground can take a bit of getting used to lol:D. She takes a 6'9'' rug, standard FS bridle and headcollar.
Once you've ridden a big'un, riding anything else makes you feel like you've nicked the kids pony:D
