Thanks so much for the messages and kind words I have just found on here - really appreciate it.

Here is the full story if you are interested....
Went XC schooling last weekend at a lovely course we have not been to before. It was a glorious day and all was going well until we attempted to jump a tiny coffin in the middle of a field. She has already jumped a nasty spooky ditch earlier with no hesitation at all along with lots of other things - she stopped at the first part, came round again, jumped it spotted the tiny ditch and shot sideways. I however didn't and came off the side. I remember thinking 'Damn! nevermind I'll get straight back on and do it again. It was one of those falls that feels ok - i.e had hold of the reins and landed on my feet - all good until I felt the crunch in my right leg

Just remembering crumpling to the ground.... KatB called out to ask me if I were ok and I remember saying 'it's broken, it's broken'. Bit of a blur after that to be honest. We had both left our phones in the car/lorry. Kat caught Jemima and ran with both horses for god knows how far to try and alert help. I was lying on the ground thinking how hot it was. I managed to get my BP undone and my hat off and put myself into the recovery position. I was there for what seemed like hours... I knew KatB was doing her utmost to get me help and all I could do was wait. She'd had to run on foot with two horses for some distance and the first house she found there was no answer. She then managed to find a lady to call an ambulance. I paramedic arrived pretty quickly after that and told us that the air ambulance was on its way. I was given Gas and air and started to feel a little better - simply because I had help I think. It is very scary lying there not knowing what is happening. Two other ladies also using the course found us and were wonderful too. They took our horses back to the main yard attached to the course and look after them. The air ambulance arrived and the crew were fantastic. They got me into a stretcher and gave me some morphine... I remember going in the helicopter and being strapped in with headphones and a microphone

It was the most surreal experience and I was only sorry I could really appreciate it. My arrival at the hospital was a bit of a blur to be honest and I got quite scared. There were lot of people around me and I didn't know what was going on. KatB had stayed behind to check on the horses (I was still fretting about them) and also to call my OH. I was given more morphine and remember them telling me they needed to straighten my ankle...what happened next was the most frightening and painful experience of my life. I had three people pulling on my leg, one holding my arms and one holding my head. It was almost an out of body experience. I was screaming for dear life and shouting at them to get off - the nurse at my head was smacking my face telling me I was hysterical. They gave me yet more drugs and I think they started pulling again and I passed out

Next thing I remember was them telling me I was going to theatre. They cut my clothes off and then some time seemed to pass but can't be sure - I think I was having Xrays. They said they wouldn't be giving me a general anaesthetic but something in my spine - is that the same as an epidural? I wasn't processing information at all well. I do remember the injections into my spine though and it was horrible. It hurt and also I was scared about them doing it. I don't remember anything about the op at all - I was sedated for it and felt like I was dreaming most of the time. Next thing I really recall was being on a ward which is where I have been for the past 4 days
crazy.gif
The op went well and the most recent xrays are good - ankle broken in 3 places and they have wired it back together and put a plate in - I have a bionic ankle

Leg still too swollen to plaster though. Was going mental in hospital and begged and begged to be allowed home. They eventually agreed yesterday under the proviso I would have a nurse in each day and I would go back in on Monday for them to assess it again. So here I am. I'm sure I have forgotten bits or got things muddled around....
My season over before it even started. My dressage saddle fitting cancelled

HOWEVER - this has taught me so much. That I am so lucky to have the most amazing friends that have helped so much both on the day of the accident and each day since. That there are people out there that don't get paid much money and do the most amazing jobs helping people day in and day out. I might have a smashed up leg but it will heal - some of the people on the ward I was on are much more seriously injured, or are elderly and very poorly and totally reliant on others to help them, often lonely and frightened.
I am now off to catch up with all that has been going on on here

A big big thank you for the nice messages and the biggest thank you to KatB for her quick thinking on the day and her endless help ever since.

Much sympathy sounds very similiar to my experience - will have to compare x-rays sometime. I am now 4 weeks since my accident and it doesn't hurt as much. Be prepared for boredom though!

Be grateful for one thing at least yo passed out! They triesd to straighten my ankle 4 times with only morphine. Good luck with the recovery and if you ever want a moan or advice from someone a few weeks ahead of you let me know!

oh bless you, you poor thing, what an experience. Can't believe you thought to put yourself into the recovey position! Sounds like KatB is an absolute star.

Nice to have you back ISZ!
Also glad to notice that at no point did you worry about what knickers you were wearing or whether you'd shaved your legs lately... told you that you worried about these things unnecessarily

What a gripping tale, you really went through the mill. Poor you and poor Katb, bet she was petrified. This season seems to be over before it started for lots of people. Hopefully you willl get some hunting in instead.

Was rather an eventful weeked.... We're all pleased you're over the worst now, so fingers crossed for a quick and uneventful recovery.

Poor you - I know exactly what you are going through as almost a year to the day I did exactly the same thing when I fell off at a show - broke my ankle in three places (essentially breaking my foot off my leg) Bloody painful isn't it? I did the ambulance (road not air though) - morphine - pulling foot back onto leg - thing.
I ended up with an 8' plate 11 pins and a screw to hold the lot together and was in hospital for 10 days (my foot was swollen too so they couldn't operate for a week...) - you will be pleased to know that I was riding 4 months later and jumping pretty much straight away (much to my families' dismay!)
I bet you are now really bored and still in pain right now - if you want a friendly chat at any time with someone who has recently been through it PM me.

You poor things, wishing you the speadiest recovery.
It seems the new hho trend to land on your feet and then shatter your leg or ankle.
KatB how fantastic of you .

Blimey I must have missed that, you must have been in such a lot of pain. I broke my ankle doing a cross country run last year and that was bad enough and it didn't need to be yanked. Wishing you well and a speedy recovery and well done KatB for saving the day!

OMG - that made my stomach turn just reading your account! Hope you are up and about soon. Makes me feel glad that I chose the county air ambulance (the red one) as my charity when I did my first triathlon at the beginning of July.

Oh my god that sounds horrendous, thank goodness KatB kept her head and got help. Also reinstates that we should carry our mobiles with us when we are out.

I hope you are feeling better soon and the pain begins to ease quickly, take care ISZ xxx

OMG!!!!!!!!

You poor thing!!!!!!! I TOTALLY sympathise, what an awful awful thing to happen.

Madgirl is right, there does seem to be somewhat of an HHO trend this year... I broke mine in exactly the same way (the way you describe the fall fits mine and the thoughts running through my head scarily accurately!) in Feb, then Madhector, then Sarah Jane.... now you.

Great to hear you are home but your account of the whole thing made me feel quite sick, not suprised you were hysterical having your smashed up leg pulled about.

Thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery.

OMG
