Possibly a stupid question...
Ive got a tb who had pretty bad hooves when I got him. I've been giving him a biotin supplement and his hooves have improved massively, but I'm now wondering if I need to continue with the biotin supplement, or if brewers yeast would be as good?
The biotin is combined with calcium, but I have changed his diet, so he is getting a lot of calcium in his feed already.
I know that brewers yeast is a good source of B vitamins, so does that include biotin?
Also, how much would I expect to need to feed to a 550kg horse?
Thanks
Kx

Biotin is vitamin H, nothing to do with the B group of vitamins.

I always feed brewers yeast in addition to a hoof supplement as they have different actions (yeast for gut function and biotin for hoof health).

I know its also called vitamin H, but it is a B vitamin... ( B7 ) Hence my query. Im just not sure if there is enough B7 in it to make it ok to stop the separate biotin supplement?

My understanding is that with a good diet, the horse manufactures its own biotin, I have never fed it. I use a broad spectrum mineral and vitamin mix targetted at the feet, that is to say a good mineral mix which already has some yeast sac in it, trouble is that in the UK, the cost of individual supplements is so high, and marketing so sophisticated that one can forget the main principal is to provide the basics: good quality forage, with minerals and vitamins balanced to suit the region.
