Bird scarer petition

Ugh, what an ugly thread this turned out to be. We moved to rural Ireland about 14 years (give or take now) and we are surrounded by farmers. I've learned a lot in that time. I love being surrounded by pasture/cows/sheep - I don't mind the muck spreading (even though I think it's not supposed to be done now?). I love the baa's and little replies (especially now) from the little lambs. I don't mind at all when there are bellows from calves being weaned or tractors belting up and down the roads or the sound of shotguns culling foxes - I don't mind any of this and even when at peak time in the best weather I know it could go on all night because the Irish weather is so inconsistent but grass must come in for the silage pits - at first I though machinery was being stolen! I hate that farmers don't get the right price for a raw product that almost induces them to use artificial growth hormones/pesticides etc to break even if at all, not all of us want cheap food, but not all are in the position to choose. I don't mind roosters crowing, I have my own lol! BUT, I hate that this thread has turned so nasty and that Wagtail is struggling with what seems like excessive noise pollution and it's OK for people to knock what she is going through in such a vindictive manner.

Nice post.

I think it is my business how I choose to deal with it, it is not a thread seeking advice, I have real life people for that. Thanks all the same.

In this context, yes they do.

Not necessarily as the OP has chosen to differentiate between shake and vibrate. To shake a house suggests a more violent movement, whereas to feel a vibration through the house suggests that it was more low impact.

Anyho, thats just my take. For the record the bird scarers around us resulted in me coming off my horse last year as he hates them. This year there seems to be less of them but when they started one sounded like a bomb going off, it was ridiculous. Thankfully it seems to have been rectified now. But it does make me reluctant to hack around the farm as my horse really doesn't handle them very well, he is 20 now so thats unlikely to change unfortunately.

I live near the railway and freight trains make my house vibrate not shake. I think there is a difference.

To be fair only Wagtail knows the extent of the problems she is having.

Thank you. It is not as though I am forcing people to sign.

Sorting out my particular problem does not help any others in a similar situation. If we had clear legislation, everyone would know where they stood. Then bad feelings should not arise. People should not be put in a situation where they feel the need to complain. I am not the type of person who does, and I put up with the disruptive noise of these things rather than become one. I don't agree that the way to go is making a complaint against a neighbour and if clear legislation was in place there would not be a need.

So, if you get specific bird-scarer legislation passed but one of your neighbours continues to place his gas guns too near to a ROW or too early/late, what will you do about it? Complain to the appropriate body or ignore the law-breaking in the interests of good neighbourhood relations?
As there is already appropriate noise pollution legislation, which you are refusing to use, I can't see what you will gain.

Really sorry to hear that. It's a shame that some people don't seem to give a damn. As I keep saying it will probably take a rider death before anything is done, and even then I can see some of the people commenting on this thread saying (as they already have done) that anything can cause a horse to shy or bolt. As I say, it's sad.

Thank you for your contribution.

Thank you for your contribution.

Wagtail, why so sarcastic/condescending/antagonistic? You do yourself no favours.

Really, I understand your plight . . . I get that the noise is making your life difficult . . . but I'm beginning to question the point of this thread, beyond just being obtuse and/or downright stubborn and, in this case, rude.

I can't say I'm surprised that there might be a touch of sarcasm, after pages and pages of everyone else knowing her problem better than she does as well as being accused of bringing the whole farming industry in this country to a standstill and then we will all be starved to death. Get a grip everyone, only she knows how bad the problem is, we can only imagine how it must feel to be kept awake by constant noise and the stress this is causing her. Ok so some of you might be able to deal with this better, well good for you. Either sign the petition or if you don't agree with it then don't. It really is that simple. Hope you all have a good nights sleep.

It's a thread about a petition. What is rude about thanking people for their contributions?

Well put!

On a totally different note; I didn't know you were Australian, Wagtail! Out of interest do they have gas guns over there? I'm kind of intrigued as to why we don't have them over here.

I live in north East England and I've never heard one round here to my knowledge . Only place that I know uses them is the local landfill site!

So you are wanting to let me know you have been viewing my facebook too! This just gets better and better. Now it's turned into stalking.

And Wagtail, your response to this was "thank you for your contribution" . . . this is why I questioned your sarcasm . . . honestly, I'm baffled by this/your attitude/the point of this thread . . . so I'm another who is walking away.

Wagtail, I think you have a problem much greater than the bangers.

I think some people have an unhealthy obsession with trying to work out who people are in real life and then let them know in no uncertain terms. It's actually pretty sinister.

For those who are now no doubt puzzled, my facebook page has a mistake on it which SF was referring to in her last message. She was letting me know she knows who I am in real life. This is something which I find rather disturbing. Not because someone knows who I am, but because she wanted to let me know that in a covert way, which is a very strange thing to want to do. Doubtless those involved will be on here like a rash now. Sit back and watch.

Right I want an apology right now! I was searching for gas gun groups for you. I found one. You were already a member so I obviously didn't post it here. How dare you accuse me of this. I am not the slightest bit interested in who you are, I was just surprised that your nationality has not been mentioned on here, and as you say you come from a farming background I started wondering if gas guns were as uncommon there as they are here.

So why not PM me rather than posting something that tells me straight away you have been on my facebook on an open forum?

You will now have people PMing you wanting to know my identity. It's not nice, especially given the tone of this thread.

ETA: I have been the victim of stalking before and so yes, this is a subject I am very sensitive about.
