Hi there. I'd appreciate a bit of advice on this if you can help. I bought this Neue Schule Team Up bit this week to help in the battle to get my horse going more from behind and to relax. I have added some pictures to the album of his usual 'way of going' i.e head up, neck set with short strides, dragging himself along from in front. Well, as I said I bought this bit this week and have used it twice, once during lunging and today long reining an look at the state of it.

I can't quite fathom out how the bit has got so ragged on the lozenge?! I've only had the horse a few weeks so am yet to get his teeth checked, although I will be this week as a matter of urgency! I've been using a copper roller up until now and would imagine it's masked things somewhat. I thought he had a back problem and have had a physio out (who did find he had a tilted and rotated pelvis, and many a tight muscle but nothing more), however I'm not thinking more along the lines of a serious teeth issue? What are your opinions??

Golly that is very marked after only being used twice. :(

Is the NS bit made from a soft metal?
I think that you are right to get a dentist to look at him.

I have a NS Snaffle, and it has been scratched but no where near as bad as that, and it was after i lent it to a friend.

To be honest id get the dentist out asap somethings sharp in there!!

Get dentist to check. But my mare does this. Had dentist, vet and chiro. It's a habit now when she's stressed and doesn't understand she will pull the bit through her mouth and chew it. Thankfully this is lessening as she us learning but it costs me a fortune as she will only have happy mouth type bits!

I think NS bits just mark very easily.

All my horses have them, all have the dentist every 6 months, and all their bits are pretty scratched. They love them though, and go far better in them

Oh my GOD - Never underestimate the power of the equine dentist! My horse is almost unrecognizable.

Not old is he now relaxing through his back, neck and shoulders but he is relaxing on to the bit, salivating and most of all he is happy. Not only with his ridden work but generally. He has stopped being so stroppy with his field companion and for the first time ever they were necking the other day. It's like my horse has undergone a personality transplant. I no longer feel like I am riding a tightly coiled ticking time bomb, I feel more like I am riding a glorious confidence giving angel and no over exaggeration there.

Very sharp at the back, I put my hand in for a grope about and actually drew back in pain when my finger hit one particular tooth. There was also a bit of misalignment going on, but nothing that couldn't be sorted.

Thats good that you've managed to sort it out for your boy.
I'm interested because Ive just bought a NS bit for my horse, and after being used 3 times, it looks like the bit in your photo...
EDT saw him 6 months ago, so i thought everything was ok, hes been reluctant to take a contact, and shakes his head ( even when lunged with the bit in ) and really chews on the bit. He is better in the NS than anything else Ive tried.
After reading your post, I'm getting him checked again, and we'll go from there.

Id say get the dentist in to have a look but this will probally keep happening especially if the horse chews on the bit alot it also could be the soft metal but you shouldnt worry about it to much as it is only several days old you might have a warranty or something.Hope you find out what it is. :):D;).

Get teeth and back done I would say.
My gelding did this when I first has him, pretty badly. His back was terrible and he was doing it to cope with the pain bless his cottons! Even after having it sorted he still did it as a habbit type thing.
He only ever does it now it situations where he get's stressed.

Hope you get it sorted. :)

Yes, Chiro tomorrow for him. I know that sometimes they chew alot if they are uncomfortable in their backs, and my boy is very 'sensitive' . If anything upsets him, he protests very loudly. Bless. Lol
Kx
