Bit of a shock (vets bill!)

Our little JRT had what can only be described as a sort of fit on Saturday evening. We rushed her to the vet. Obviously this was an out of hours emergency. We were at the vets for about 20mins. The vet took bloods and basically said keep an eye on her. The vet wanted to see her again today for another blood test to make sure everything had gone back to normal, and thak goodness everything was ok, but we still don't know why it happened. Any way asked for bill.....£221!! The was effectively 2 blood tests and an emergency call!!
 
Thats actually not to bad, £100 of that bill atleast will have been the vets time, the rest will have been blood tests.
I know vet bills can be expensive, but the machinery the bloods are taken on are not cheap, thinks £1000's of pounds, and obs the vet with 5 years of medical training and the nurses on duty also, it all costs.
But I know some vets do cahge over the odds.
Insuance is a must in this day and age, if I did not less dogs pay very little in regards to vet fees (job perk) then I would def insure all mine, or have less dogs:D
I know some emergency clinics will want up front and may not accept upfront payments from insurance that can be a bit inconvenient esp when the bill is high.
 
Don't think that was excessive, bloods are often very pricey, plus you had an out of hours call and todays appointment. Don't forget whilst you were only at the vets for 20 minutes they probably had to drive in from their home so would need to factor time and fuel into it .
 
Vet was already on site so no fuel etc!! I suppose when you factor in everything such as machinery etc its not soooo bad! She is insured and have called for claim form. Its not really suprising tho that so many people don't take their pets for much needed vet care because of the cost.
