Horse having teeth done tomorrow, she is still a baby and never had them done before and i am breaking her now, is it worth having a "bit seat" ive never really heard of this.....
It is just a slight slope given to the front of the back teeth. Tbh unless you are hauling away I wouldn't be expecting her bit to come into contact with her teeth, much less need to slide up the first ones. Our dentist obv does all the usual, doesn't do a 'bit seat' as such, but he explained why much better than I have done!
I'd heard a few people say to get it done as it makes mouth feel nicer??? She is not really broken yet, and i wondered if perhaps it'd make her more comfy
I wonder if it's more for the owner than the horse iyswim? Sounds like a good idea, but if you think about it, the bit really shouldn't ever go that far back. A good dentist will make her comfy if she has any probs, so all should be well.
He is very reputable to i will ask him what he thinks (dentist) her teeth may be a little sharp due to having never been done, but i think thats all to be honest, and she is unbroken she should be very soft mouthed so no hauling should be required lol x
bit seats are great for horses the need them but if youve got a baby and dont to too much with it and havent as yet had any difficulties i wouldnt do it ESPECIALLY as shes never had her teeth done before - you dont want to frighten her off having them done again.. One day she might need it bit ''if it aint broke, dont fix it!''
Your dentist will most probably round the first pre molars off for you anyway. Evidence that bit seats can enhance performance is only anecdotal tbh. Most dentists will smooth off the first pre molars during a routine visit to help the horse feel comfortable, and to help prevent the occurrence of sharp enamel points (as they can eventually lead to problems).
Mosts dentists I know don't actually call them bit seats anymore, just rounding off of the first pre molars.
