With a double bridle, the mouth-piece of the curb should be just clear of the tushes of the horse or gelding, and about one inch above the corner front teeth of the mare

Is there some sex-linked variation in the anatomy of a horse's mouth, or is the above to do with something else entirely? (As you can tell, I know little to nothing about bitting.)
