What type of mouth and cheek would you advise for:

IDxClydsdale 6yrs, fussy in mouth, not strong in anyway but can lean, and opens mouth a lot. Currently ridden in a Happymouth hanging cheek with a lozenge to most success but still not right enough for my liking. She has been tried in a Pelham but was too severe for her and a normal jointed snaffle she did not like either.

I am thinking Myler with a low port for tongue relief but not dressage legal and she would be competing in dressage.

I would think being the mix breeding she is a thinner mouthpiece would be helpful as perhaps she is finding the Happymouth bit too thick.

I normally use a normal Myler mouthpiece with eggbutt cheeks on my previous horses and have never really had any problems or had to play around with different bits. Due to never really having any problems I openly admit I am not so knowledgeable when it comes to bitting. Any one have any suggestions?

i just had all these problems with my pony, hes not strong at all, but due to his funny shape mouth, and leaning, i tried a waterford best thing i did for him... not sure its dressage legal though.i dont think it would be....have you tried the loose ring schooling bit, its a half moon bit, ?...

I have a boy who is of similar breeding and yes he too has a small mouth and a big tongue- have you thought about keeping with the french link hanging cheek, but of metal material- these are much thinner in size and less cumbersome than the Happy Mouth version- I purchased the Happy mouth hanging cheeck for my boy and he hated it!- but strangely enough for hacking he loves a Happy Mouth single jointed dutch gag- it's his favourite bit!

Mylers are fabulous.
Also Neule Schule bits are great, especially if horses are sensitive about what goes in their mouths, Iv found almost every horse "mouths" the copper mouth piece really well!! One of the best bits I have ridden in was a NS continental gag with a lozenge..... its not a cheap bit but almost every horse went wonderfully in it!

A Myler comfort snaffle might be the way to go. Although it has slightly less tongue relief than the low port (but still some) it is dressage legal. For the cheek I'd try a full cheek. Used with loops fastening it to the cheekpiece it can offer the stillness & slight poll action of a hanging cheek, used without them acts the same as an egbutt. http://www.abitdifferent.co.uk/acatalog/MB02_.html

Nari that was the set up I was thinking to try, I would have gone for the low port but sadly I need dressage legal so the comfort snaffle is the only option really for a mouth piece from Myler, I had the same thoughts about cheeks and fulmar loops. I will e mail A Bit Different as I currently buy from there and the lady that owns the company is great with advice. I will e mail her some pics of Indy and see what she thinks. Great that you have confirmed what I was thinking ;-) I might also order a NS hanging cheek with lozenge in a 14mm to see how that goes with her.
