I ride my mare in a KK DS trans lozenge fulmer which she goes happily in but I seem to be having a few issues with brakes when out cantering in company.

She just takes a hold of it and off she goes and there is little I can do other than lean back and haul on her mouth to get her to stop. I obviously dont want to keep doing this and would rather just ask her to come back to me and stop.

Part of the problem may be a schooling issue as she doesnt always tank off - she is Ok 90% of the time but I just feel I need a little bit extra until I can build up our confidence and tackle the real issue. Can anyone suggest anything?

I have tried a copper roller, loose ring french link and myler comfort but none do the trick. She is in a cavesson noseband and using a drop helped with the myler bit but then realised the myler was too big and changed to the KK. I cant use the drop with the fulmer mouthpiece as it gets in the way. I dont use keepers though - would this give me more control?

Just leans really, not between her legs and not up in the air. if she goes behind she fly bucks and races until she is either side by side or infront. She has been brought back into work and is only just being allowed to canter again so is just being a bit excited really but has developed this new habit of running off if she feels the other horse racing off too. If I go out with a steady horse she canters steadily alongside - just matches the others and totally ignores me. We havent quite clicked yet

Shes very green and a complete wuss and is still learning - I'm just learning to trust her but if I let go of her she takes a hold even more and goes faster!

When you go out on your own and canter, does she tank then? or only when there are other horses?
If she doesnt when you are on your own, maybe try pushing her on in canter then bringing her back to a steady pace, then pushing her on again and practice that so she gets the idea that when you say WO she WO's......

Maybe try something like a grackle nose band? (I havnt ever used one but some people find them really handy!)

sounds like is taking the p**s a bit........ so maybe you need a bit more strength in the bit...... I am not sure about the bit you are using....... but maybe try something like a dutch gag.... or a pelham with D loop and a single rein (or double if you prefer) just for that extra umph when you say steady up.....

drop noseband with full cheek/fulmer is the ideal combination, the sides keep the drop exactly in place, are you sure noseband is fitted right? keepers won't make much difference though!
i'd prob try a waterford, something she can't lean on.

I am having excactly the same problems as you at the moment - my horse is fine on his own but in company gets extremely strong - even with his pelham - just sets his neck and goes - if I half halt or ask him to come back to me he gets stronger and gains speed - and feels like he will buck if I really try to pull him back - yes with me it probably is a schooling issue - plus excitement in company - I have tried a waterford - he did seem to respond to it in company too - only thing is I can get one to fit - 6" is too small and I am told you need them to fit bigger than a normal snaffle
