Driving home today along a really busy road with cars/lorries travelling about 50 MPH, there is a woman on a wild chesnut dancing along the pavement.
She looked to be having problems with it so I followed the lorry in front and slowed right down to a crawl.
The lorry driver was really thoughtful and waited until there was nothing coming on the other side so he could swing out and give her more space, and I crept past behind.
I was shocked to see she didn't acknowledge either of us even by a nod of the head in thanks, so I stopped the car further up and said it was really difficult to expect drivers to slow down for horses if their riders didn't so much as nod a thanks at them..
I got a mouthful of abuse, "Madam I am out of your road on the pavement, I did thank the lorry (well neither of us saw it) and I didn't see you..!"
With this she waved her long schooling whip around the horse's backside making it dance even more furiously and kept shouting abuse at me.. Saying basically why should anyone say thank you..

I just said "Never mind then" and drove off, but really I wanted to slap her...(or say nastily, "If you learned how to ride that bloody horse then perhaps you wouldn't be in so much danger on the roads.." But I didn't..

So if you know anyone on a fiery looking chesnut, a long greasy looking black haired middle aged woman who shouldn't really have been out until she learns a little more control of her horse and her mouth, riding near LIVERTON in Devon, tell her she lets the rest of us down..
I'm sure that lorry driver was saddened to take so much care and get so little response. I agree she couldn't take her hands off, but a nod and smile would be enough. neither did she look scared of the horse, just an idiot to be honest...

They are out there aren't they. But in my experience she was the exception rather than the rule (fortunately)

Silly woman has no excuse! If her poor horse is that bad she shouldn't be riding it on a busy road anyway and she of all people should appreciate when drivers slow down for her and could certainly have managed a nod or a smile of appreciation, and as for not seeing you, she should be looking! It really annoys me when people are like this!

Phew! Not me!!!

I have been stopped by horsey people who have said I havent thanked them when I have. I try to make sure they see me nod or wave but not sure it is always possible. If people dont appear to thank me I assume i didnt see them thank me!!!But I must admit when you are driving towards someone who doesnt bother to at least nod it is very annoying. They let everyone else down.

My horse can be quite a handful on the road at times when he has his silly head on. It is impossible to move my hands never mind take them off the reins but you can still turn your head and smile to acknowledge good considerate drivers. I'll bet she could acknowledge a bad driver if they had irritated her!!

She could have atleast smiled (even it was through gritted teeth)

Makes me mad and lets the horse world down

ETA: anyone see the letters in this week's Daily Telegraph about riding on the roads?

I had a moan at two middle aged ladies on monday, they were hacking without wearing any hi viz, bright sunny day, but I met them in an area with trees right over the road, luckily I was doing 30 and only just stopped, they were taking up the road.

They went single file so I stopped and put window down. First rider walking straight past. I sais that I nearly didn't see them due to the sun, they just blended in, the reply was that there was nothing they could do and it was my problem.

At that point I reminded them about Hi Viz gear and the fact that I teach R&RS, the second rider thanked me for my concern (somewhat sarcastically), shan't bother next time.

sigh

I am glad you had the balls to stop and have a word. She may have thought about her attitude and will be a more considerate rider for it in the future!

Well there is always hoping

Obviously thinks that riding illegally on the pavement excuses her!!
