I saw these in a book I was reading the other day, I didn't even realize that they existed. I really like the look of them but I am guessing that lots of people will think that they are not purebred Labs and right them off. What do you think of them? Do you think you would be able to show them?

Wow- gorgeous colouring- but looks nothing like any lab I have ever seen, would be interested to hear what those in the know will say.

They are absolutely 100% not pure bred labs with that colouring - sorry! And nope, you definitely would not be able to show them, Kennel Club stipulate golden, chocolate or black for labs

Hey, who knew?

GH is right though, the breed standard says labs are meant to be a solid colour so they wouldn't do too well in the show ring unfortunately.

My Mum knows someone with them, he had to get the DNA tested to prove they were labs, I think he was convinced there had been an accidental mating somewhere! I don't think you can show them as they don't meet the breed standard which states only,

Wholly black, yellow or liver/chocolate. Yellows range from light cream to red fox. Small white spot on chest permissible

are acceptable colours.

They are. There is a bloke that field trials one, he has the DNA certificate and the pedigree on him at all times because people refuse to believe.
They are a complete throwback obviously, but how many breeds haven't been 'improved' at some point?

Otto and most other Springers I know will stand on point, just like the Setters used to 'improve' the breed do

In those photos the dogs shown do not resemble labs in the slightest - I am not saying that there are not B&T labs, if Anne Roslin Williams says so then it is definitely so

, but those shown are not IMHO

Oh they resemble them a bit
tongue.gif
and I bet if you coloured them in solid black everyone would say it was a Lab.
The one the bloke works looks exactly the same as the ones pictured and he has a piece of paper to say (in the recent past at least
grin.gif
) they are pure Lab

does it matter if they are showable or not, f they are healthy and happy with a brain then so what for crufts, I have 6 border colies that work and there motto is brains not beauty.

Errr no, I can look past the colour of a dog

I think normal coloured labs vary so much anyway, people have questioned whether Sam is a purebred because he is massive, and equally I have seen 'purebred' labs that are smaller then springers. Some are really slight and others (like Sam

) are built like sh!t brick houses

I think the breed varies a lot!

Nope not at all, I don't show so it wouldn't bother me in the slightest, I was just interested. I would love a black and tan lab, I think it's good to be different!

I love that pup with the mosaic black leg- thats quite a distinctive marking- I read the bit about the genetics and its all to do with a throw back to the Gordon Setters used many many years ago- genetics always amazes me!

They look so much like Rottie pups. Interesting. A lady at the park has a Golden Retriever that she rescued recently. He is basically the russet colour of an Irish Setter, with white on his chest. She thought he was a mix, but perhaps not.

I refuse to comment on Panda Shepherds. Apart from the fact that I think they are an abomination.
Stop dicking about with the breed, it's been cocked up too many times already, thanks!!!

In America they introduced a breed of silver labs with amber eyes. To me it just looked like they were crossed with Weimeranas!

The Slilver Labs really are a crossbreed, in recent lineage anyway.
Whereas the Black & Tans are throwbacks and can suddenly pop up in any litter.

Have to say my first thought on looking at those pictures was that they were not lab heads, but if they are american that could explain a lot, look at their GSDs.
Weird colours can certainly pop up, look at blues, whites etc in GSDs, they are disqualifying colours according to the breed standard and yet nowadays you get people specifically breeding for them, and charging double the price.

I would be mortified if my lab produced something that looked like that

I don't like them myself, they don't have the lab head (and yes I am trying to imagine them solid black
tongue.gif
)

If you go right back in the lab history, they originated from the St Johns Water Dog, which had white markings on their chests and muzzles. Interestingly, the Newfoundland also evolved from this breed.
