You know the old saying. If you are going to have a Black horse make sure it has some white on it to let out the Devil..This was soo true of a friends horse. What a little bleeder he was.Stunning to look at but my god had a temper. It's name was Sweet Revenge..

It was only the other day that I heard that black horses are renown for being 'quirky', hadn't ever known that before in the 9 years I have had mine!
He has a little sock on his off hind and about 5 white hairs on his forehead, just enough to let out a bit of devil!
He was hell as a child and still pulls meanie faces, but doesn't really mean it!
He also goes brown in the sun which I hate!
In the height of summer, brownish pone:

Goes back to black in the winter!:

I'd just say dark bay. Like this is a bay mare:

Tis true I'm afraid! "True" black horses are extremely rare! My horse (in my sig) is technically a very dark bay! Although if he can be deemed anywhere near black - he certainly is very quirky & doesn't have enough white to let the devil out! Just a tiny bit on his near hind!

+1, hence my post earlier. The first horse I posted was dark, but had dun coloured muzzle, and turned bay in summer. BUT the black horse I posted was black, no matter what time of year, or light you looked at her. My beautiful, gorgeous spirit xx

Brown horses are black on the body but brown around the eyes, muzzle and flank. Maybe on other parts of the body. A black horse, is classed as black, no white or brown at all.

and mine - passport says black - but goes brown in summer - apparently it's a genetic thing, some do, some don't - cats are the same.

Bit of a cruel photo, really, but he doesn't mind - 17hands of pure dope (until you get on him!

I used to ride a black 16hh trakhener (sp?) - he was just like the Lloyds bank black horse, same long flowing mane and everything. He was also broken to drive and use to pull funeral carriages along with a black ID mare.

I'll try and find photos but think they might have been lost when previous computer broke!

Well I've always considered my horse as black... But I do know pure black horses have to be ALL black but shhh

Here he is now (hope this works!)

fingers crossed! XD Oh and bear in mind that he has been sick for the past 7months and was just getting better in the 'now' photo! XD

I was told black horses are very rare too and agree the majority of pics people have posted are dark bay. I was also told brown isnt a common colour either. Dark bay is often mistaken for black or brown.
