Bloody dog at Badminton

I have skimmed through the replies, and not wanting to stoke the fire of the should/shouldn't dogs be at big events argument, I think it should be irresponsible dog owners that are banned. Walking round the trade stands yesterday there was a horrible smell at one point, looking back I noticed I (and many others) had stepped in a huge pile of mess. It was too spread to be picked up but I cannot believe someone could be so incredibly irresponsible and inconsiderate as to leave it there. I also noticed a fair amoutn of mess on my way round the XC and to and from the car parks. The other irresponsible owner I saw was a woman at the Colt Pond (I believe this was where the horse was chased?) with a loose dog. No lead, he wasn't attached to anything, and he looked suspiciously like the dog that chase the horse. I'm not saying it definately was that dog, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it were.
I really despise irresponsible dog owners, dog mess is dangerous and offensive and so are loose dogs dangerous at places like Badminton. I certainly don't think dogs should be banned though.

i do not take my dogs to events but that is because one of them is a nightmare around other dogs, she barks at them & i would not want her to upset a horse, also i hate seeing dogs getting stood on etc in crowded spaces.

I don't know about banning dogs, as I said before I'm not keen on puppies being there - yes they should be socialised etc, but Badminton is not the place IMO.

I also think that dogs, especially exciteable ones, should be on a harness at events like this, although not impossible, much harder to escape from.

I also think that people with dogs should not be allowed to stand at the rope by the fences - if they are stood that close then it will be too tempting for some dogs.

me and OH took our two JRT crosses with us yesterday. we were also stood at fence 8 when the collie got loose from, the other side and chased the horse. My dogs LOVE being out in the crowds, meeting new dogs, people and are very well behaved when out. All other dogs were wll behaved and it comes down to responsible ownership. I saw more children hanging over the tape etc and screaming and shouting than any dogs playing up. an out right ban on them no but a serious thinkfrom peoiple to if they can control their animals

"I am a bit concerned that a rider on here has a horse that is spooked by seeing a dog on a lead . Never mind competitions , you can see dogs on or off leads on hacks . Surely it is better to gradually introduce young horses to dogs if you don't have any around ?"

Well to be fair, I dont hack! I also do not have dogs. So basically my horses don't see any dogs whatsoever in their day to day life. So I have absolutely no way of "gradually" introducing a dog to my horses. The only time they see them is heaps of they at a horse show! The LEAST best time to be worrying about dogs! Anyway, when a dog gets loose and chases a horse, this is a totally different situation - you cant stop your horse spooking and possibly bolting if being chased by a "predator". Why aren't these dogs taught NOT to chase horses? That would be more practical.

Im saying my horse spooked that day in the cross country, because we came thundering round a bend and suddenly were faced with this white dog with black spots (not your usual).

I don't feel its fair that us non-dog owners have to put up with people at events dragging their dogs about. My horses have of course got used them more and more at each event however it can still scare the crap out of them (and me!) when one walking past turns round and starts snarling and barking at us. Why should I have to put up with that at all?!

At an event yesterday, I had finished my XC and went out on the course to watch. Standing near a fence some kids were beside us with a little yappy thing. Another dog walked past and this thing went ballistic just as a horse was approaching the fence. Now Im sorry but XC is dangerous enough without (possibly young) horses coming into a fence whilst looking out of the corner of their eye at this horrid shrieking dog! The children were absolutely useless and just giggled throughout. It made my blood boil.

Yes, if every dog was well mannered and just trotted about watching quietly from the side lines on a lead, then I have no problem with that. But I see way too many who are badly behaved and I believe absolutely NO dogs should ever be able to get away from their owners and run loose. A really think a fine should be put in place at these events for people who do not keep hold of their dogs.
