I just wrote a massive report and it deleted it!!!!!

Off to Merrist wood for JAS today. Plan was that it would be educational for him, i feel like he gets a bit less spooky everytime he goes jumping indoors - despite me hating it. I knew he'd be very green today, never seen anything like indoor eventing fences before, so entered intro and PN on basis he's been very looky first round and then we'd consolidate with second round.

Did not start the day well. Realised i'd forgotten the sat nav and didnt know the way, slipped over on the ice on yard and cracked my knee on concrete and then my wiper blade came off lorry just as it started raining

Course was as i was expecting (thanks for everyone who's posted videos so far!!) only looked pretty small (blasted BSJA has had some advantages then!!). Warmed up very bouncy and was particularly scared of some blue chairs next to the ring

In we went and in short he was really really sweet!! He was green as expected but kept moving forwards which is something that has only come recently...tell tail signs he was a bit worried though like running into canter and going on wrong leg and getting very deep to fences, when he's confident he takes much bolder strides.

He was super and very honest up to the arrowhead which he just didnt get!!! He wouldnt lock onto it at all and third attempt sort of ran into it and then went to put a foot up to climb it...eeeeeek!!!!!

I am actually not upset with him at all and he really showed how far he's come with rest of round. He got a 5 for his willingness and outlook though which i think means kc thought he was just unsure and not naughty at all. He also got some good marks for technique....all his were better than mine which is about right!!! I was very tense and nervous and it showed in my riding...not pretty

.

Knee was agony to ride on so i withdrew from PN which is a shame as i think doing the sj again would have been useful. Nevermind i think today will still have taught him lots.

I was in tears when i got off as knee was awful and a lovely lady came up and told me not to be upset as he was obviously just green and she thought he was a super chap!!!

Very sweet of her but had to explain about the knee!!!

Here is a video so you can see my slightly baffled pony and dreadful riding for yourself. Its not great quality as off OHs phone...which will also annoyingly record up to 2mins!!!

Red wine (it medicinal!!) and ice pack if you got through the waffle!!!!!!!!

well its all experience and adds to his mileage
smile.gif
i bet you've taken lots of positives from the day - he did look nice and forward like you said. i hope your knee gets better soon

sounds painful!

Thanks MAndymoo

It's all about getting miles on the clock with him and i know from experience that specific problems like that fence won't damage him or put him off at all...he'll just be better next time. I'll obviously find an arrowhead somewhere to jump though
smile.gif

oh no I'm really sorry to hear about the knee, what a b*gger!

Still he looks fab and sounds like he has matured so much!

Ooooo you should have said hello Gucci_B!!!

I was amazed by how bad the style marks were in my class tbh and i think intro with young horses and/or inexperienced people is quite a big ask at JAS.

Thanks

He'll start at Tweseldown intro, got 3 intros planned and if he comes out as well as he finished last year i'll look to move him up to PN late April time. Fingers crossed!!!

I think he mostly looks a bit baffled in the video!!!

aw he's so cute
grin.gif
i think he looks fine, yes green, but certainly willing
smile.gif
you can sort of create the arrowhead quite easily...get a cone or a polyblock or even a dustbin as the centre point (ie the 'arrowhead') and then put two poles / \ sort of like that....you then go into the poles (obviously have to have them wide enough to go through the middle) and jump over the bin/ cone/ polyblock as the 'arrowhead'...did this in a clinic a few weeks ago. once he is jumping this straight jump it the other way as a true arrowhead...if he'll jump that i reckon he'll jump any XC fence!
smirk.gif

Oh he looks good! He seems to be really taking you to the fences with what looks like only a few chipped in strides. I think arrowheads are one of the hardest for young horses to get. And having seen that many fences in a small arena will make the first BE SJ look very very easy!
cool.gif

Sorry to hear about the knee, having damaged mine 3 separate times last year, I feel your pain! Arnica to go with the wine?

nlm - thanks! I was veyr pleased with how forwards he went. This was a key problem up until recently, he'd drop right back when he was worried and make it very difficult when he got to the fence!!! Much easier now he takes me in
smile.gif

Ta Fran

bb - shame you weren't there today but hopefully see you at Tweseldown. Have you checked the ballot?

Looking very good, AR. Sorry to hear about your knee...hope you are not in too much pain.
Note.... you are NOT allowed in accident room this year! Used up all your passes last year. xxx
smile.gif

aww, i saw your round to we liked your horsey! and as others said you were doing really well and there is obviously the potential to be great!

Haha great is not the word
tongue.gif
but better than at the moment i think
smile.gif

I think it all looked quite quick, but I think that's only by comparison, having spent the last half hour watching my heffalump mooch round
wink.gif
. I don't think it looks as bad as you make out and it's a very artificial concept. I think some horses 'get it' immediately and others don't. A good JAS horse does not necessarily immediately translate into a good XC horse.

Keep up the BSJA and roll on proper BE
cool.gif

Hope the knee gets better soon. I slipped on ice going to the tackroom (my garage
smirk.gif
) last week in competition gear and ended up on my behind in the vegetable patch. Was immeasureably pleased that I'd thought to put my waterproofs over my competition breeches before going to get my tack!

Thanks Gamebird
smile.gif

He likes to jump from a very forward canter, as he's not naturally very scopey his jump comes from backend power and needs to travel to get this. It's tricky to get the balance but generally if he's forwards he'll jump of any stride.....mostly

It is very artificial isn't it? I don't know how much i think its any more use than a bit of fun if you have the right horse for it but i hope the experience will help him. Proper BE is waaaaaaaaaay more fun

Darn ice is a bu**er isn't it?!?! I luckily had jeans over my posh jods too.....sorry to say you in vegetable patch did raise a smile. Knee is a bit better thanks to pink wine

Just remember how much he's improved (and I can see it from your threads even as a mere mortal of comp riders) - baby steps are the way forward
grin.gif

You should see the vid of the test I did this morning - not pretty at all because I was so tense
blush.gif
Remember it's only Feb
wink.gif

Aw, he just looks a bit "what on earth...?"
crazy.gif
about it all, but to keep going forwards was good, even if he didn't understand the arrowhead; Rome wasn't built in a day.
wink.gif

Funny sort of competition JAS, neither one thing nor the other if you ask me so good on you for having a go.
I have every sympathy in the sore knee department - went outside this morning to take a picture of the amazing red dawn sky and slipped over on the ice, two bashed knees and a scraped elbow (camera ok though and a very pretty pic). I just went upstairs and got in a hot bath though, didn't have to go and ride
grin.gif

Thanks Baydale - he definitely thought 'what on earth?!?!' He was cocky as anything over warm up fences and then got a bit of a shock when he went it!!!!!

Ta teapot - he has come along way i think, just have to try and remember that more often!!!
