My grey TB horse has had a little time off and although he's kept his weight well over winter, he has lost a fair bit of muscle and is inclined to be a slender little thing. I'd really like him to 'bodybuild' a bit more muscle and have been upping his workload to get him to bulk up. I'd like to tweak his feed to give him the best shot at putting on weight.

What would you recommend?

He currently gets a scoop of Speedibeet with sunflower oil and Topspec feed balancer. He doesn't look poor at all and is full of beans as usual. He is not a fussy eater but I don't like to give him huge feeds as he struggles to get it all down, bless him! So I need to feed him something conditioning and preferably with a decent amount of protein in it. Any suggestions?

Hi,
My skinny hoss has tried Baileys no 4, topspec super conditioning flakes and Copra meal.
I think copra is good but quite tricky to get. I would feed topspec flakes if horse was also a bit lazy (as its oat based) Baileys no4 is the easiest as you can buy it and its none heating.
Mine also gets alpha a cos thats good too!
ps the topspec balancer sometimes changes how much of other stuff you should feed so its worth ringing them.

Don't Equine America do a supplement specifically for building muscle? (Have never used it though so couldn't recommend!).

What worked for mine and I still swear by them is milk pellets. You can get them in a tub now - Equivite bodybuild I think one is called and they worked for me without sending him off his rocker.
Depends on the temperament but be careful of some feeds as it has been known for the 'calm & condition' feeds to send some a bit loopy but that does really depend on how your horse reacts to different feeds and sugar/starch levels etc. The feed I am trying at the moment is the new 'Winergy equilibrum condition' and this has a higher calorie content but only 10% starch and this seems a nice feed at the moment but Spillers recommended if this was too much then Winergy Equilibrum Senior as even though he is only 13 it has a higher calorie content all the vits and mins he should need but also a low starch level of about 2% I think. I was recommended 3kg a day.

I would recommend Dodson and Horrel Build Up Cubes. Helped my extremely slender Belgian Warmblood transform into a well covered little madam. I see someone reccomended Baileys No4. Be warned, cos it can be heating. Sent my lazy mare through the roof as I learnt that the protein levels are rather high. Good luck finding something that works for your horse (: x
