Body condition scoring research

Hi I hope this is okay to post on here,
I am currently in my final year at Harper Adams University, conducting research for my dissertation project which is investigating the accuracy of equine body condition scoring among individuals involved with horses in the UK, and exploring whether factors such as age, experience, qualifications, competition involvement, and level of responsibility for horse care influence accuracy. If anyone has 5 minutes to answer some background questions and fill in a body condition scoring task, it would be greatly appreciated!

This is interesting. I would maybe have had a question on if the person had direct experience with laminitis, Cushing's or EMS and similar, as I imagine these are the people who are more concentrated on this type of observation. Good luck with it all!

Would also be interested in the results. One thing and it may just be me was I found the use of “poor” odd. To me a zero is emaciated yet if someone was to say their horse was “poor” I’d think of something that was a bit ribby (probably a 2?)

I did think the descriptions weren't quite aligned with, for example, the BHS descriptions - emaciated, thin, lean, good, fat, obese vs the survey of poor, very thin, thin, moderate, fat, obese.

Yes I agree.

Interesting though - particularly as my horse was on the weighbridge today too.

And there was limited options, some were 3.5 for example but it was only 3 or 4 neither of which was correct.

I agree- there should have been a ‘cannot accurately score’ option which I would have used several times

Done. But, it would have been good to have some shots from behind. A few I gave a moderate score too because it wasn't easy to see if there were fat pads at the top of the tail. Also the small grey pony, at first I wanted to put obese, then thought hang on is that a big crest on the neck or has the mane been messed about with to look cresty, this because you could see it caught puffed up under the head collar.
