I am so impressed with him! I’ve barely even trotted this horse under saddle. He’s never hacked. I had planned for a friend to bring her horse here but she can’t come until Tuesday and I just need to crack on. Figured bringing boggle wouldn’t necessarily be helpful.

He was so backwards leaving the barn etc and had dogs next door running at him, Bog screaming, other horses galloping up to fence. I just sat quiet and gently asked him to go and he did. Other than that he absolutely marched around, he stopped at some bin bags and another weird rock formation and again I sat quiet, dropped the reins and just corrected him if he tried to turn away. Didn’t even put my leg on just waited a few minutes for him to decide it was ok to go. He was so forward that I ended up doing a 50 min loop which was not my intention, but I didn’t want to turn him around incase he was double as forward going towards home.

He seemed to love it. He has a huge walk. He doesn’t like to stand but that’s ok it’s his first hack, he’s anxious, and he needs to move. We had some vans and he was totally cool with it.

Oh and I was scared. Really scared. Because I am so used to and comfortable with Bog and it’s been a long time since I hacked a totally inexperienced horse, with no help and no one with me. Sang ten in the bed most of the way. But he was just a total dude, I couldn’t have asked for more. Video to come but photo of him very pleased with himself post muddy wash off roll! Judging by the state of boggle (no sweat) and the fact he had eaten all of his hay, he didn’t spend 50 minutes screaming.

Video clips! That big forward walk! So pleased with him, he’s just given me tons of confidence, I have this horrid hyper awareness since the shark thing where I think bad things are always going to happen (what if I fall off on the road and break my back, what if he gets loose and gallops into a car). And I’m not a naturally confident rider by any means so this was a big deal to take a horse who’s never hacked out on his own without even anyone on foot.

That's huge progress. In your video of him rolling, his pasterns don't look half as bad now he's getting some strength.

Bog a little cross the thread is diverting from him! He did his longest walk this morning since October when this all kicked off, 45 mins as he joined pepper and I on her dog walk. I counted a total of 3 imperfect “leg movements” in the whole thing, up and down a long steep mountain pass.

He seemed so happy to be out doing something!! I wish I could stay here as the hacking is so good for this sort of thing, don’t really have it at other barn.

Dusty IS a good boy and so brave. Often ex racehorses haven't hacked on their own before but are usually quite good at it because they have already seen a lot.
Lovely to see beautiful Pepper in the video too 😍

You're doing a great job with Dusty.

Don't feel pressured to keep him. Enjoy him while he's yours, keep doing what you're doing and then whatever happens in the future you know you've done your bit.

Bog is looking lovely ❤️ The scenery is beautiful too, although I'm not sure I'd be willing to tolerate the amount of snow and the risk of fires in order to get that view on a daily basis 😂
