I was just wondering if anyone had ever had this happen to them? My friend was kindly riding George yesterday as I had to work, and whilst she was riding the metal stirrup bar completely sheared off the saddle  Luckily she was riding in the arena and not doing fast work so no damage was done - phew.

But less can be said for my saddle which is now knackered, there doesn't appear to be any signs of wear / stress on the metal is has just snapped  What is worse is this a decent Barnsby dressage saddle that is only 18 months old!

We are getting our local saddler to look at it this week (unfortunately the saddler I bought it from is now retired and no longer trading) :( So I will have to see where I go from there. I am terrified that they won't be able to repair it, or it will cost a fortune to repair, I just hope Barnsby will be happy to help. Also what is to say the same won't happen to the other side.

My Oh was riding our tb ex racer at a fairly fast canter on Salisbury Plain when his right rein came off the bit. The billet hadn't been properly secured after the bridle had been cleaned! Luckily tb was having one of his saner days and came back in response to OH sitting up and praying!!!

Arent the trees of saddle under a warranty? And therefore cover the stirrup bar? I would speak to Barnsby Direct, imo I would want them to rectify the issue FOC.

Definitely speak to Barnsby, I don't know if they'd class that as 'reasonable wear and tear'!

I was hacking once, went for a gallop, took my reins - gently - to steady Dylan up, and the right one came away in my hand, the leather completely snapped about 3 inches from the bit! I steered him left into a bush and rode back to the yard with one rein :p could have been a lot worse, he's bloody strong and enjoys his fast work, so I was just glad he stopped and didn't go mental.

oh dear could have been far worse, i have had it where someone had been fiddling with my saddle and didn't realise and both my leathers come off the saddle while going over a 3ft jump, horse spooked as the stirrups hit the floor and i came of and winded myself. 1st and only time i have fallen of him in 5yrs!

i would speak to barnsby, and good luck

T, Speak to Barnsby they are brilliant they helped me out with my saddle and put a new tree etc in and it was a very reasonable price. should only be gone for a couple of weeks at most and you can use your jump saddle in between

Sounds like the saddle may have had a defect so I would expect the manufacturer to put right for free.

Another reins disaster - my groom was riding, luckily in the arena, when one rein came completely apart (the little hook thing that fastens the rein on the bit just fell off and this was only the second time I had used these reins!). Luckily C cantered straight out of the arena and came to a sedate stop by his stable.

The saddler who is going to look at the saddle also knows the owner of Barnsby, so once he has had a look he will give them a call on my behalf (fingers crossed).

So just out of interest, has anyone actually ever had this happen to them, or heard of an instance of it happening? Just trying to find out if it is a freak breakage.

Thanks :)

Hi definately speak to Barnsby, the saddle is only 18 months old so in effect 'new' you don't expect to pay out £100's and then saddle to break 18 months later. The stirrup bar should be able to be replaced, would depend if the tree twisted when it broke, but as you say it seems to have snapped of so doesn't sound like the tree was under pressure so wouldn't have thought that would need replacing. If they try and charge you speak to trading standards, this work should be free of charge as the saddle is so new.+
I had the opposite happen to me a few years ago, my tb decided to barge the gate as i was trying to open it, as he shot through my stirrup caught the gate latch, unfortunately my bars were a bit to tight and prevented the stirrup leather coming away the saddle so I ended up underneath a horse attached to a saddle that had spun round that was attached to the horse that was attached to the gate. The saddle was a year old went back to the manufacturer, who replaced it with a new one as it was pretty damaged the force twisted the tree and they admitted the bars were to tight. Took a couple of weeks to sort out but couldn't ride as horses back was also affected.
Good luck with sorting it out.

I saw this happen out hunting once.
The saddle was about as old as the well seasoned gentleman rider!
He just looped the stirrup through the saddle flap and carried on!
I expect the saddle was written off after that!!!

I had a stirrup snap while riding my pony when I was 14. We were going at a flat out gallop at the time. I hit my head and lost my short term memory!

Glad your friend wasn't doing any fast work. I would definately contact the make of saddle head office...

It is definitely not a normal thing to happen especially given that the saddle is so new.

I had a stirrup leather 'go' at the stitching where the buckle is stiched on, while going at a brisk canter and 'out of the saddle'!

Managed not to fall off, and sat up and took a while to stop!
