Bone tainted beef (raw people)?

I did wonder and hence my aprehension, the butcher said it was fine for dogs and he gives alot to other raw feeders and its fine every now and then, some sites say its ok and the acid should kill bacteria and some say bone tainted meat not recommended.

We clear out our butcher every week, some of it is def not human consumption fresh..no problems whatsoever. It actually aids your dog`s immune system !:D

Im reading like mad as we are arguing over it:o:D Im thinking "it's fine and dogs have a much shorter digestive system than us, obs meaning less chance of parasites/bacteria getting a chance to linger" hence how they can eat more rancid stuff and are less suseptible to salmonella and such bugs.
I would also hazard a guess that alot of dog foods are probably made of tainted food.
But then I am no RAW expert:confused: but Im convincing me self then unconvincing lol.
He gets my usual answer of "don't feed it to regan" (my rotti) :D:D
Obs EK you have been feeding this for yonkey doo's compared to our few months so you would have seen something happen by now lol:o

Out of curiosity has anyone had issues with RAW or know of any? someone mentioned to be the other day that their dogs "way back when" in 19 o blonk:p suffered something bacteria wise (cant remember what) and something to do with tripe.

Cayla, I'm no raw expert, but here's my view on it.

Dogs digest much faster than us so are much less likely to have issues. They eat really rancid dead stuff by choice, not because they are hungry.

I haven't knowingly fed bone tainted beef, but have fed chicken carcasses that were really smelly & a bit green without any problems, not even loose stools!

If possible I'd freeze the beef for a few weeks & then feed a small amount & check for issues before feeding in any quantity. Freezing kills off quite a few bugs/parasites etc, might not make a difference but would maybe make me feel better ;-)

DavisN I just said to OH, I would prefer you freeze it b4 you feed it:D, not sure what it would help in regard to bone taint but it's better than nothing if a bit unsure. I still wont feed it to regan lol:D

Is this ok to feed? butchers has given OH alot of this, is it ok, anyone else feed it?

It does sound manky, doesn't it? But as another poster has pointed out some dogs eat the mankiest of the mankiest with no ill-effects. I am no raw expert, but I would personally cook it , because knowing my luck, I'd feed it raw and mine would all come down with the raging squits.

Great minds think alike. I'm not sure if I'm happy about this or not. The thought that my mind works like yours is a scary thought!

It's my belief that freezing AT A SUFFICIENTLY LOW TEMPERATURE will kill parasites, but not bacteria which will merely lay dormant and then become active again when thawed.

The crux for freezing is the temperature and from what I have researched very few if any domestic freezers go low enough...if you have a commercial one on the other hand.....:D

There's plenty of info available on this if you look for it; being lazy, from the top of my head, -30 degrees C may or may not be about the temperature at which you can get rid of some of the nasties.

Thankyou for that:) maybe I will pile it in the dead body freezer at work:D

It does indeed sound mankey, I have fed some to the outside cats lol and froze the rest, I will monitor the cats:D and poss cook it also as u say:) I told OH no more, I don't need the stress:p:D

Last year we had a problem with our cattle and lost 5 in quick succession before the vets finally found the cause: clostridial infection. Now our dogs had a go at every carcass while it was in the barn waiting for the hunt to collect and none showed any ill effects so I'm sure yours will be fine :)

Thankyou, thats kind of made me feel a bit better and v interesting indeed:)

I would feed it with no hesitation.

Dogs are capable of eating all sorts of nasty stuff and coming to no harm. I caught mine tucking into Bambi well past its die by date and full of maggot and they were all fine.

They are well use to raw as it is all they get.

I was thinking about this last night - how sad am i?

Surely this must be ok for them to eat. If it is caused by not chilling the carcass quickly enough after slaughter (as it states on a google search) & not by any external or artificial influences, then I see no reason for it to cause dogs a problem. Surely when animals die or are killed in the wild they are not refrigerated. Unless they're in Alaska!

Mine eat some pork (not organs) and deer not frozen first they are fine. I know the source of both meat though as in I have seen the deer be shot and I feed the pigs myself. And I only freeze rabbit for parasites if I gut them (retches) then they get them fresh.

That may have been our goldie you were thinking of. He was exposed to toxoplasmosis through feeding raw. Though seemingly health at the time, turned out to have a neurological condition which could have been the reason for him being able to be exposed as its supposed to only be those with problems which can get it as, like others have said, most of them have stomachs of steal! None the less, its the reason why ours aren't fed raw anymore.

They can also apparently get it from eating cat poo, this is one thing Ronnie has never done.

In answer to the original question, i'd be very careful. Would definitely freeze to kill anything off just in case.
