Ours are in anyway overnight but I would prefer in anyway, much rather him be in restricted than out possibly running round doing himself an injury, he is 31

In as ours are turned out in fields way too small for the number of horses in them (the joys of london) and if one horse is set off I dont want to risk my boy who will jump out the field injuring himself (and cant belive all the other owners leave out!! A horse has already had to be pts from breaking its leg in the field, the madness). I think it depends on the horse tbh. The school literally right next door to our yard has them every year and this will be my boys first year on the yard so not sure how he will react. But the stable is his comfort zone so he should be calmer there :)

Mine will be out this year - I've done it both ways. I've a newbie and new foal this time. Not worried about boldy foal but newbie will be interesting. Last year the others just boxed in the newbie livery but they don't like this one. I have 5 in 12 acres so plenty of space. Did check my expiry on my 3rd party though this morning........

Out.

if a firework lands near by, they can get away from it.

doesn't bear thinking what would happen if a firework landed in the stable.... :(

What a very scary thought, thank you for raising that. Mine will be out, no doubt I will see their hoof marks the next day from gallavanting round the field. Just as well they have plenty of space....

In but thats because they`re in anyway....not many fire works near the yard otherwise i`d be leaving them out...so much safer than the risk of a firework getting in a stable..

What ever their usual routine is, if they normally come in on an evening I'd make sure they were in, if there normally out, they'd stop out, ours seem to be used to it as we have a lot of shoots near us and our YO goes bunny hunting with his gun anyway, so there used to bangs :D

Out - They can run around if they like, my field is safe, the tb will be booted.
I saw a horse come over it's stable door last year, which didn't end too nicely.

Out. They live out anyway, but even if they didn't I would rather they be in the field. IME most horses are much more settled when they know they can run away if they need to. They have the security of their friends and I'd rather they had a gallop about the field than got wound up in the stable. Our three don't seem concerned - although we've never had them very close. They're used to shooting and low jets though so I don't think loud noises bother them any more!

I would stick with whatever the normal routine for the horse is. If they are in at night bring them in, if they are normally out at night leave them out. They do get some security from their routine, so if you broke that then there were fireworks going off all around as well then I don't think that is a good idea.

Wellll, mine's totally bombproof; used to be kept near to where the military trained and they had this big firing range and these mega big noisy guns would go "booom" whenever they had the red flags up. The whole earth would shake and the richochet would go through the woods, and my sweet boy never ever turned a hair, so I don't envisage any problems with fireworks! Have got an old boy here new on the yard too, but apparently he's been there, seen it, done it as well.

Horses I've had in the past I've mulled about this a great deal, but then again they were pretty OK too; I think if horses can deal with a thunderstorm then they can deal with fireworks.

Re. turning out: I've heard some horror stories of horses who've been turned out when fireworks were going off and they panicked and ran into barbed wire or straight through hedges and ended up in the road, so if I had something that was a bit iffy I frankly don't know what I'd do, out or in. Probably in, with maybe a grill over the door in case a firework did come in, or even door fully closed, tho' that might cause some horses to panic even more.

I have decided that horses are mainly better where they can feel they have a choice of run or stay. They also like to know the source of a noise and when in a stable they often cannot tell where it is coming from and get very unsettled. I have had the odd horse that was better inside with a radio but most stay out.

3 of mine are out in field two are youngsters however they seem fine was up with them when some went off now. 4th pony has to be in stable as she has just had hock injections today.

There was a firework display right next to our horses field a few years ago, I went up and watched to make sure the horses were ok, and they were standing there watching them!!

When they finished they went back to eating the grass :)
