Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a good book that explains basic schooling / flatwork. I ride at a riding school once a fortnight and find that my memory is appauling (sp) and even if we do an exercise, the next time we do it I totally forget what aides I'm supposed to use - this especially happens with lateral work, I forget which leg and hand is supposed to go where. I'm sure my instructor is sick of explaining stuff again and again. I thought if I could read up on this between my lessons it might help.

So really I'm looking for a book with clear descriptions of flatwork movements - more training the rider than schooling the horse if you like. Any recommendations welcome!

Cheers

Either the BHS Manual of Equitation, or the GNEF (German equivalent) one. Both have basic descriptions of the aids for all basic school movements. I prefer the GNEF ones myself (I have the basic and advanced ones).

I second the vote for the BHS manual of equitation. I got it as im going to do the BHS stages this year, and wanted to know how to do things "the BHS way" LOL. This book explains all of the aids for each movements really clearly.

I've got some equestrian books looking for a new home - I'll see if there's one about schooling cos if there is you can have it. Will let you know in next couple of days
