Can anyone recommend any autobiographies/ biographies, or good horsey novels.

I have read Black Beauty!!! and Horse whisperer years ago....but do fancy reading a autobiography really.

War Horse...although it is a children's book apparently. What's more worrying is I didn't even realise!

I like William Fox-Pitts autobiog and Mary King's

Started to read Secretariat but found it so dull I only made about 20 pages then gave up. Wasn't for me

read: william fox pitt as already, war horse is a must! mary king is good monty roberts (think its listening to horses?) though not as good as i was hoping...

watch: sebiscuit, the disney secretariat is AMAZING y non horsey family loved it, it looks like an exaggeration but it has the real footage and just mind blowing...! a must see...!

Agree with Dubsie, start with S's birth if you are not into the ancestral detail although I loved all of it but then I was lucky enough to meet him when I visited Claiborne to see the great Nijinsky. Another similar type book is 'Horse of a different colour' the true story of a newspaper man who lost his job and used his severance payment to try and breed a champion and did in the Ky Derby winner Monarchos.

War Horse
Seabiscuit
Secretariat - it starts slow but really picks up, I made non-horsey OH watch the film and he loved it!

The Byerley Turk by Jeremy James. It is the biography of one of the founding sires of the thoroughbred and an excellent read.

I can also recommend Saddletramp, and Vagabond, both true stories by Jeremy James and cracking reads all about his adventures on horseback.

Remembered another one, it's a kids' book but I loved it - King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry; it's about the Godolphin Arabian.

'In the pink' - fantastically funny book about 2 ladies that give up city life to take up hunting with the Ledbury.

I read it every autumn before we start hunting again.....

Just started a series called 'The Exmoor Files' which is a horsey novel series and they seem really good. :)

Autobiographies I would recommend are Pippa Funnell, William Fox-Pitt and Zara Phillips. :)

War Horse is a brilliant book, realise its a kids book but so was Black Beauty lol.

The film is currently being made (directed by good ol Stevie Spielburg) think its out this summer - cant wait!

Dare anyone not to shed a tear:)

War horse is fab, it is a tear jerker though, as is Black Beauty. The stories of Joey and Beauty both transcend children's literature in my opinion.

There is a really funny book about 2 sisters that go hunting after giving up life in london, I think its called something like "In the pink" also nick skeltons autobiography is good as is Frankie Dettorri's

Kiss and tell by fiona walker - novel set in the world of eventing.

So far, so good by mark todd

Mary kings autobiography

WFP autobiography

The horses of proud spirit (buy off amazon) about a American horse sanctuary - absolutely fantastic book, can't rate it highly enough!

Any of mark rashid's books - again can't rate them highly enough!

OP - why not have a think about the people you are interested in or follow, then search for them on ebay, Amazon etc to see if they've written a biography?

Other books that I think haven't been mentioned yet - Fair Girls and Grey Horses, the autobiography of the Pullein-Thompson sisters, any of R W F (Willy) Poole's books, they generally contain articles he wrote for various country magazines, all of Lucinda Prior-Palmer/Green's books - Up, up and away, Four square and Regal Realm, excellent. Just read a few Everest books, the best of wich were Into thin air and The climb, both about the 1996 disaster on the mountain, but both with a very different perspective.

And not biographical, but I've been amazed how much I'm enjoying them, Phillipa Gregory's historical fiction novels, currently on The Queen's Fool, I never though history could be so fascinating.

I have the Byerley Turk and War Horse awaiting me, but I'm blessed with a big pile of 'to read's at the moment!

Spot_the_Risk - phillipa gregory is one of my favourite authors and The other boleyn girls is brilliant - have you read it yet??

The Byerly Turk as mentioned is really good as is Eclipse. Another book that I found interesting but I could only read online as it is a Wikipedia link is the story of Napoleon's horse Marengo.

Pippa Funnells is good, I'm just starting Mary Kings but like it so far!!

I have recently re-purchased all the jill books by Ruby Ferguson on ebay and am loving reading them again!

The Exmoor Files is good too!

Riding Lessons and Flying Changes by Sara Gruen (She also wrote Water For Elephants, recent film with Rpatz).
Horses Never Lie by Mark Rashid, theory about passive leadership and not too carrot sticky, airy fairy!
Chosen By A Horse by Susan Richards

Any, or all, of the Jinny at Finmory series of kids books

Or, if you want to scare yourself dafty and never look at meek, middleaged men in the same way again..........The Ladykiller by Martina Cole (thanks god it's not been on TV, fabulous writing but very, very gruesome!)
