Books

Not horsey at all but the Game Changer series of books by Rachel Reid would be excellent holiday reading.

Heated Rivalry (terrible title, excellent TV series) is based on them. I watched the TV series, was OBSESSED with it, then read all 6 books in the series in a week, even though I was in work so could only read in the evenings which shows how quick and easy they are to read. If I describe them, it will probably put you off - I would never have chosen to read them without having seen the TV series but they're a lot better than they sound.

They're MM romances based around ice hockey players. Romance isn't really my thing but I enjoyed them so much! They're not literary masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination but they're fast paced and the characters are easy to care about. There's a lot of sex in them but it's necessary to the plot and to moving the story along - in most of the stories anyway.

With the exception of Heated Rivalry and its sequel The Long Game (you need to read HR before TLG) you can read them as stand alone books but they all do overlap in terms of characters and plot so reading them in order of publication is best in my opinion. You could read just HR and TLG and get the main story or you could read Game Changer, then HR, then Role Model followed by TLG if you want a bit more context.

If you miss any out, miss Common Goal it's the weakest and you wouldn't really miss any relevant plot points. Tough Guy is also not essential but the characters do feature again in RM and TLG so it does give more of a context. Just typing those titles makes me cringe but the books are better than the titles suggest!

I cannot stress highly enough how good the TV series is though. Especially from episode 3 onwards. If you don't love the characters in eps 1 and 2, it's deliberate - keep going.

I didnt like it. Ive not been able to put my finger on why, but I only finished it as I left it running in the background. I think if you dont like the TV show you will hate the books, so worth watching first.

That’s a shame. You’re the first person I’ve seen/heard say you didn’t like it.

Best book I’ve read for ages. True story. Of finding a baby hare. And raising her. I learnt so much as well.

I know, I was gutted as i was so looking forward to it after all the rave reviews. I still cant work out what it was I didnt really like. I'm so weird and annoying sometimes.

Inca Ride by Edward Lines - true story about university friends doing a long distance ride through Peru.

I know you said stories but these are both brilliant and not instructional type books:
My Horsy Life by Janet Rising
If Wishes were Horses by Susanna Forrest

Caroline Akrill - Flying Changes and The Silver Bridle are both more adult type ‘pony books’ too.

Oh my god. I just started listening to the first book. It's basically just porn!!! 😱

THERE'S BOOKS?! I may or may not have watched the whole series, back to back, on Saturday

Keep going, the sex is part of the story but not the whole story. The TV series is the same, there's a lot of sex in the first two episodes but that's just the start of their relationship and the later episodes are so much deeper.

Yes, like I said they're no literary masterpieces but they're very entertaining and easy to read. "Hockey smut" is a whole genre that I only found out about thanks to Heated Rivalry. I'm still obsessed with Shane and Ilya and may have rewatched episodes 4,5 and 6 several times over the last few weeks. I may as well have moved into the cottage myself😆.

Google describes it as sports, which seems a stretch based on the above posts 😂 I don't think I have now TV, are the books worth reading on their own?

It depends on your tastes. I have just listened to the audiobook of the first one whilst driving. I would say very negligible storyline, probably 75% of the book is graphic description of gay sex between the two main characters. Put it this way - there were not many points in the book where I didn't turn it off before driving into a yard in case someone overheard it while I was parking! I have not seen the TV series. My literary tastes are wide-ranging, and not necessarily highbrow (I do read/listen to a lot of very lowbrow stuff and am definitely not easily shocked), but I think this is the most sex I have ever encountered in a 'mainstream' book!
