Very quick recap...
Chum has always been grumpy round the girth/tacking up, gradually getting worse. New saddle / reflocking / physio appeared to do the trick but gradually reverting back to old self.. All seemed to point to changing shape and saddle not a good fit anymore.

So... fitter came out tonight - different one to who originally fitted it (personal reason for this, nothing onimous) so it was interesting to get another opinion.

Fitter thinks saddle is a good fit (couple of very minor things) but thinks problem still with pony's back that is NOT being caused by this saddle. There was a particular sore point, very obviously pointed out by Chum's reaction, off-side about 3/4 of the way back from front of saddle, about 6 or 7" down from spine (I know where it is even if my 'map' doesn't make sense

). He could feel heat there. In his opinion it was muscular.

He recommended Bowen and could recommend a particular person who is supposed to be one of the best in the country. He said it was obviously up to me what I did next but seemed quite convinced that it would get to the root of pony's problem instead of the merry-go-round of vet/physio/saddle etc.

I have been googling it and it all sounds wonderful

but I think I am becoming a bit cynical in my old age and taking everything with a pinch of salt

but I have got to do something to sort my boy out!

So does anyone have any experience of Bowen, good or bad? PM me if you prefer.

I've got to sort out the contact details for Bowen Man tomorrow (Julian in Worcester is all I know so far) and will have a good chat with him. I will probably speak to my vet too (though I'm guessing vet has to give permission anyway??).

Just to top it all Chum was very sore on hinds after having new shoes today (he was mildly sore for a day last time but never had a problem before then) so fingers crossed he will be okay tomorrow or that means another call to make...any ideas on why this has suddenly started happening - will speak to farrier too...

Bowen good. I'm very cynical seeing is beliving and all that. Doesn't work on all and Bowen pracs. will be first to admit that. We use a lady called Sarah in Wrocs

Hi, I have a Bowen lady out to my horse and she has worked on me and my husband a few times too. I can honestly say that it really has an effect on my mare. When she is haing treatment, she licks, chews, yawns pulls faces etc. You can really tell that `something` is happening. When we get an uncomfortable bit, she tries to bite you and pull away etc, but as the area is worked on, she changes. I am all for it. I use a lady from Leicester. She works on horses and people and she is also a nurse - or used to be.

Bowen is wonderful! We've used a fantastic lady called Chrissie Hale for our horses, and she is great. The horses absolutely lap it up and it really does make a difference. We were also recommended Bowen by our chiropractor, in particular with a horse who had had lots of muscle wastage before we got him. And the combination of the chiropractic work and the Bowen utterly transformed him.

Bowen is definitely wonderful!
Boo has had 2 sessions so far and is due another at the end of the month - I asked on here about it and then meant to follow up with an update but haven't gotten around to it!

There's always been something about Boo that I couldn't put my finger on, but I knew she was in pain somewhere. She was declared fit and healthy by 2 different vets, 2 chiropractors, a saddler and various knowledgeable friends

I had a Bowen therapist out (Beth Darrell) and she picked up on a massive amount of niggling muscular issues, mostly within her hindquarters and a blockage in her shoulders. When I changed her rugs that evening it was as though her muscles had all 'popped out', I can't describe it in any other way, and has become less crooked, tracks up better and steps under cleaner. Before she was VERY grumpy and was allergic to standing still, whereas now she is just happy to 'be' and, although still prone to over-boiling, she is just so much nicer to be around

A BIG vote from me!

Chrissie Hale is actually the lady that I use but I didnt know whether to put her name. She is a lovely lady, and she is very nice with the horses too, a very soothing approach.

Thanks for all replies

It is all sounding very positive! A lot of the things you have mentioned describe Chum perfectly - fingers crossed it may do the trick.

A couple more questions..

I have been recommended Julian Gaze - anyone used him / heard of his work?
And did you need permission from your vet (I have already left a message for her to call me).

Many thanks again

BTW his feet are fine today but will still speak to farrier..

I haven't used Bowen. But a few months ago my mare wouldn't give the farrier her right hind, she was a right cow bag.

Called vet and he recommended a physio, she came out and said my mare had a muscle spasm in her back. She's been out about 8 times and my mare is now ok and lifting her hind leg up.
