box or trailer?

I have a small windfall coming and am hoping to use it to get mobile.

My car (dacia duster) is on the small side for towing but it might just be possible with a single horse trailer.

So, my question is, invest in a tow bar and new trailer or get a second hand small box instead? Budget for either would be around 6k.

Would the running/maintenance costs on a lorry make it very expensive? Am I being too risky considering a trailer when I would be close on the towing max?

Help me HHO experts, I'm so confused! !!

Tbh I would get a trailer. Lorries are expensive to sit around and only be used a few times a month.

Would get a trailer, but only if your car has the power. I had one that was no where near close to its limit and it was awful to tow with! I will never tow with something under powered again! Will your windfall allow for a bigger 4x4(£5k) and single (£2k) isn... Plus sale of current car.

for your budget you'd either be looking at a basic van conversion (assuming you just want a 3.5t box for one horse?) or an older coachbuilt box if you didn't want to go down the trailer route. Good ones do exist :) I love mine and I do prefer it to going out in a trailer - nice to have somewhere to get changed that isn't horsified, and I also sleep overnight in mine if staying away. I couldn't justify running a 4x4 all the time when my box is quite cheap to run. I have camped in an IW trailer and this is much more comfortable

Get yourself a nice well built 3.5 ton horsebox preferably on a Renault Master chassis pan cab as they have a low centre of gravity.
Whatever you buy get it mechanically checked out by a mechanic and the bodywork checked out as well (especially the floor and ramp).
If you need to find a good local specialist horsebox mechanic ask people at local yards etc. who they use.

Photo below showing my set up of Vauxhall Vectra Elite 2L, towing 650KG RIce Richardson trailer, with 680KG horse. My car is a 150bhp car which had a towing weight of 1600KG. Still have enough left over for tack, nets, humans, etc. Think the Duster will tow 1500KG so if you are looking for a trailer you would have to get a very lightweight one, the new modern trailers are very heavy compared with some of the older types such as Rice Richardson, Bateson and Pegasus.
