nothing that was brilliant TBH...

A few Sec D's.....

I don't know how much they normally go for at Brecon, perhaps JM can enlighten us?
But if the prices are suddenly reduced as a result of the credit crunch for one, then I can only assume that the breeders may not have foreseen this when the mares were put in foal.
Again I may be speaking out of turn as I have no idea where the Brecon ponies come from and if they are truly bred or are like Moor ponies that are allowed to breed on the hills and then rounded up, checked and then sold on.
If the latter then obviously I would guess there has been less cost involved for the owners/breeders than people who had bred ponies on land/stables that had been rented etc.
There is the issue of the cost of passporting though so that is a valid point.
Again though I may be talking through my arse so to speak as I have no idea where these ponies come from.
I am not familiar with this sale as the only ones I have been to have been Leominster and Beeston and those have horses and ponies from a wide range of sources.
I don't have a problem with the ponies going for slaughter though if they are of poor quality but I suppose the only thing I do have issue with if that is the case is the on going question of why are poorly bred horses and ponies continually allowed to be bred?
Until this is addressed then sadly there will always be a continual supply of abbatoir fodder

At a sale it is quite easy to see which foals have been dragged of a hill (and also off their mum as they don't get weaned), rounded up into a cattle lorry and taken to the sale (usually muddy, wet and un-touched). These sadly are usually the ones that go for meat. The 'higher Value' ones have usually been handled, wormed. and weaned properly.

It's so sad, I wish I could win the lottery and buy them all.......

Hi,
Are there any sales further north. I was just talking about what my horses are costing me this winter. As I have acres of grazing left, haylage all arranged, shavings for the ones kept in, feed bought in advance and all the other stuff spare rugs etc I could easily take on a couple more over winter. Am really lucky to be in this situation. So helping a couple of sales ponies seems good to me.

I can't go to sales - I went to one just after I bought the pony and it broke my heart

There was a little Sec A foal that was desperate for his mummy - I was so tempted to bid for him but we had no way of getting him home and I couldn't afford to keep him even if I did get him home. Luckily someone bought him who got him for showing and I saw her at a show over the summer and he's going brilliantly for her

You are so right , its high time breeding for the sake of it was stopped.
Its disgusting the way some breeders and dealers treat these poor horses/ponies. Dragged from their dams , shoved into pens and chased into wagons Sold on and on scared sh`tless and for what to end up shot for the frogs, its a crying shame.

Stallions have to be vetted then licenced so why cant the same be applied to mares before she can be bred from .

At last months York Horse Sales a batch of colt foals that had obviously been bought at the New Forest sales went through the ring. It is possible that some of these Welsh ponies will do the same this Friday.

Melton made good prices yesterday. Solid cob stallion made £1500

decent riding horses around the 2 grand mark

mini shetties around 35 ginueas.

Every time i have been to Melton market and thats always one to many times as the treatment of the horses gets worse each time i've now stopped going until i bring home as many ponies as possible specially from the manky gypos there.

As for breeding of any animal be it horses/dogs/cats etc i think its about time something is done about it as there is so many neglected animals now that i think we have far to many now and far to easy for the scum to pick up also. I wish people would think twice sometimes when breeding there own horses though instead of seeing £££.

I heard there were a lot of NF youngsters at the last Melton Mowbray sales as well
