An add for Brecon sales this weekend just popped up on my feed. They are full with 345 equine entries. So if anyone is looking for a horse or pony...

Is it also a sign of the times that people can't sell them privately so are putting them through the ring? I haven't actually looked at the catalogue yet so don't know what is actually entered.

Eta - I've had a quick flick through the catalogue. If you want a Welsh of any section, age and gender then there's plenty. Same with gypsy cobs. There's a handful of proper registered Shetlands, a handful of fake Shetlands. There is also a 2yo Fell Pony Gelding early on if anyone is looking for one.

There are some decent looking horses in the catalogue.

Sales in Wales seem to be the thing. I got told off for this once, but I think that people don't necessarily like to travel into deepest, darkest Wales to view one horse, so bringing them to a collective sale is normal. I have also known several really good horses that have come from the sales - but I have only heard of the success stories, not the others.

There are some crackingly well bred Welsh ponies in there. One can only assume they wouldn't stand up at the proper Welsh pony sales which is why they have avoided them. But they will do someone a turn and may well turn out better than expected.

I know nothing about gypsy cobs and their bloodlines but there looks to be a few nice types from the pictures on fb.

I hope the Lone Fell pony finds a good home.
 
I'm also surprised by the palomino she sounds nice (lady number 43)

Also lot 23 sounds nice, why hasn't she sold privately?

Also lot 20 the Connemara - surprised that's going through the sales although why's it been out of work 3 months? Could just be an injury but having previously done a host of all rounder activities, now at a sales? Again why not sold privately?

Number 87, Storm, sounds really nice but why not sold privately?

Bonnie sounded ok until seeing at 14 she needs "further schooling" unless she's been part of an rs/trekking so just been doing the basics

Also lot 99 has been placed at HOYs so why wouldn't you sell privately surely he's worth a decent amount?

284 and 286 sound really nice, why are they at a sales?!

311 is sad - 19 been used in their rs and ready to be spoilt - why not sell him privately?
 
Getting the right buyer? See my post above. Some sellers don't like private sales.
I have known really good horses sold at sales, also I have known some to go through a sale because of a certain reason.
Buyer beware, although there is some protection. Read the conditions of sale carefully.
 
I was thinking of going down as there was a couple in the catalogue which caught my eye. Brecon normally have good prices which is probably why they get far more horses than Llanybydder, I'm guessing it's a lot less hassle selling there than to a private buyer.
 
How do you know that a horse you're bidding on at auction doesn't have underlying health or soundness issues, are you just going off of what you can see at the day and crossing your fingers that they aren't buted up to the max? There were some comments about the last sale that there were several horses there which looked like welfare cases :(
 
I went to Brecon last month, and in all honesty the prices were stronger through the sales than on the private market. Some of the prices being bid for anything cobby seemed slightly mad to me but there we go.

I suspect it's a similar clientele to those back in the 90s who went to Brightwells monthly sales at Hereford market. Anything with bone made all of its money, anything looking more TB type went for peanuts.

Yep. Two IDs that were large, unruly and with nothing done to them really went for something like £6&7k, mid teens cob looking worse for wear, ex riding school, eye infection and sweet itch, almost £3k 🤷‍♀️
 
The owner of number 92 runs a riding school near me. I was sure I'd seen an ad from her recently so I had a bit of a look. He was being advertised in May because he wasn't suited to the riding school so they were looking for a 1to1 home for him. The rest of the listing tallies with the advert although there's more in the ad - I imagine there's a word count for the catalogue. I can understand a riding school putting one through sales, they don't have the same relationship with the horses as a single owner would. The obviously need him gone before winter where they'll need his stable for another, more suitable, horse.

I don't know, they'll probably be people there with a grand child and enough space for a small, child friendly golden oldie. I worry more about all the little 11-12hh part breds, there's a very small market for them, work involved breaking them to ride or drive and for that you might as well pay for a registered Shetland or Sec A.

Also true. I could never go to a sale, I’d end up with too many ponies
 
Friend got a v nice young unregistered Sec D type. She'd been bred on a farm but no one had any use for her. The farmer had taken her there himself and was very watery eyed about the sale - couldn't have asked for a better home though

The oldies upset me too.

I'd be useless if I had the lorry. Not a chance of it coming back empty

There was a belgian draft in the last sale, unstarted youngster....I bid on him but he went out of my budget
 
Number 300 sounds really sad too 17.3 at 6, bought with back issues now apparently "all sorted" but all they've done with him is put "the saddle back on". He's jumped out of his field (must have done it multiple times so they know he'll do it again, otherwise they wouldn't mention it) and the reason they're selling is "lack of time" . If you believe that, you'll believe anything. The poor thing was probably started too early given his size and now he's being passed on again at just 6.
 
I had to look, was about to breathe a sigh of relief as no donkeys or mule , then i got to lot 340 and 341, Mildred and OMO, how sad at 17 years, i wish they had put them to be sold them together....it will be hard on them to be separated. Don't think i could get away with sneaking 2 in, i might get away if there was a mule.

I saw them on the Facebook page too. Very kind looking donkeys. I’d love to take them both. I hope someone does.
 
I think a lot of people just want to sell them without any comeback which is why they end up at the sales...considering how much people pay now at horse sales I'm not surprised 🙄 They are very different to how they used to be!
 
I bought my little Welsh D at Brecon for less than £500, he has the most super brain and personality, we call him Mr Perfect Pony.

However, I don't think I could go to the sales again.
It broke my heart, all of the old horses and the terrified babies who had clearly been ripped off their mums the day before.
I wish I could have bought all of the oldies and brought them home for a nice dinner and bed and then PTS, it infuriates me that people can't do the right thing by these loyal pets for the sake of a few hundred quid.
