Breeding for the first time

The Patterdale is not recognised by the KC, so I am assuming you have shown her at a all singing and dancing Lurcher and Terrier show? Take it from me, some judges there wouldn't know decent conformation and movement from their elbow. Two wins does not make a decent dog.

Many moons ago when I was dog grooming, I had a call from someone who asked if I would do a Patterdale. I went through all my books of dog breeds around the world and could not find any mention of a Patterdale so my husband rang The Kennel Club who told him that "Patterdale" is the old name for what is now known as a Lakeland. However, the name "Patterdale" now seems to be attached to any indeterminate "terrier" and the one that arrived on my doorstep certainly bore no resemblance to a Lakeland!

I would think long and hard about breeding from something that is not a recognised breed. As others have said, rescues are overflowing with dogs.

Patterdale is certainly not an old name for a Lakeland - they are nothing like Lakelands!

And while some may just call anything a patterdale if they don't know what it is, I'm sure you could say the same of many breeds. How many JRTs fit the breed standard now?

Everyone has their opinion, but mine certainly doesn't match with this view of the breed. You talk as if it's made up just to give a name to any old terrier!

Patterdales are certainly nothing like lakelands, but also KC lakelands are nothing like working lakelands (not even the same colour!). KC breeding standard now has no link to its original working background and they are competely different dogs. Love working lakelands, fabulous terriers.

Black fell terriers are a specific type of working terriers which carry the name patterdale but yes many indeterminately bred black terriers end up with the tag incorrectly given by people who dont know anything about them which is not right either. Cant say they are my favourite working terrier breed even when bred correctly but thats an opinion just as i dont like certain other breeds.

Good luck OP you appear to be doing all the right things.

I had someone bring to my salon a "Lakeland" which was really a Patterdale. I think some of these terriers which originate from the lakes area tend to be called lakeland terriers. I was dumfounded til I did some research....

Have to smile blazingsaddles I wonder if kc judges are any better. Depends on the terrier show, almost all I have been to which have had a very knowledgeable judge and they are judging on proper working standards. Of course don't know what the shows the op went too. Kc means nothing for working dogs, for instance working lakies look nothing like their show namesakes thank goodness.

Some great advice from lots of posters esp EL. Good luck.

The best judges at T&L shows were the pedigree judges imo because at least they had some understanding of what makes a good dog and didn't immediately believe the owners exaggerated guff about what excellent workers their dogs were, how many rats/rabbits/foxes they had despatched in a day and how they were bred by old Jonny Smith (made up name) who everyone in the know deems a demigod amongst working folk and who also happens to be a personal friend of the judge.:)

When i said pedigree judges the only experience i have is seeing them at crufts on TV where you seem to get odd things placed (obese lab and lame collie this year come to mind). I seem to have had a different experience to yourself, anyone who talked like that about how good their dogs were at dispatching quarry etc is usually looked at a bit odd, not the done thing. If they work they usually have a reputation for being a good dog but then round here everyone knows everyone else usually :D The judges dont ask either. Those type of people sound like those muppets with staffys who go one about how hard they are and it will eat your leg! Not like the normal lovely natured staffys I have met.

Can't see the problem here myself so long as all that is said is true-op is doing their research, has selected a stud etc.-puppies come from somewhere! And I'd personally rather a home bred pup over one bred at a breeder who has 3/4 bitches and keeps them in kennels/does it for a living.

There are plenty of posters on here who have bred pups (some prolifically) and don't get a word mentioned about anything as they are 'known' so it's ok for them to add to the population (be it responsibly or not)

As long as breeders do it right, handle their own "rescues"..and they can be sure of that by tattooing, then it is not a crime.:D
Never confuse breeders doing it all by the book and having a life passion with the cash croppers, who currently are bashing out cross breds, until that fashion changes. Then they move onto another cash crop breed.
I am sure OP will breed her great little bitch, find super homes and probably keep in touch forever..just as an awful lot of those terrible dog breeders do already!:D
Oh yes,and a lot of them do their bit for their breed rescues too, clearing up the mess left by the cash croppers.
