a) Anyone thought Tia was serious
b) It took at least half a dozen post for those taking it seriously to show any concern about the 'puppy dunking'.
c) Nobody was concerned about the fact Lily could be eaten.
d) Nobody thought the breeding of the prospective stud dog strange if not impossible (Afghan hound X JRT or a Scottish Terrier X Wolfhound)

My mum breeds Retrievers and has a breeding ban imposed by the kennel club on all pups, so they cannot be bred and KC registered without her consent. I understand some people will breed and sell them on without KC registration but this does help somewhat.

Unfortunately if the puppies are bred properly (hip scored/eye tested parents, wormed etc) there isn't a lot of money to be made unless you have very large litters.

I understand that the indiscriminate breeders don't do this and it's more a case of my mates got a dog, I've got a bitch of the same breed, let's put them together and have some pups, but just wanted to get across the point that reputable breeders DO care for the pups. My mum travelled over 800 miles to do home checks to ensure the last litter of puppies had good homes.

It doesn't help when you breed from a good dog and bitch (temperament and health wise) and ask £550 - 600 per pup which is the average and then see other pups advertised for £200. I know you get what you pay for but people who don't understand dogs or who don't have a lot of money will be tempted to buy the cheaper puppy and end up with possible temperament/health issues.

We would never send pups to rescue centres, but would reduce the price or re-home the them via family and friends if the need arose. We also have a clause in the contract they sign saying we will take back the pup at any age if the owner feels they can no longer look after it, whatever the reason. Obviously if the dog was ill or nasty we would try and fix it or PTS if needs be.

I feel a lot of the problems could be dealt with if people understood this and only bought from registered breeders, however I don't think this will happen for a long time.

There is a puppy farm near here that breeds from 'whatever happens to get together' and sometimes does not even know the fathers breed! Yet people still buy pups from him. A lady came to my shop with what looked like a Staffy cross, I asked her what breed he was and she said Labrador/ Springer. I commented he looked very Staffy like and she said her vet had said the same. When she eventually went back to the breeder he said it might be a Lab/Staffy cross cos all his un-neutered guard dogs were Staffy types and might have got with the bitch. This dog has an awful temperament and hates other dogs which I believe is a Staffy trait, he is also not safe with children and escapes from his owner a lot. She has refused to get him neytered because 'he's cute and I'd like to breed a few litters from him first, cos my mates got a Staffy cross bitch'. I also know the bitch and she has bitten me twice (not badly) when she has been in for harness fittings and is now banned from my shop. Lots of people have told them not to breed but all they see is ££££££'s.

Apparently they should have 8 pups per litter and these will be sold for £150 each, so if they have 2 litters a year for the next 4 years that will be ok and then they can be neutered and they will buy a new dog and keep 2-3 bitches form the last litter and start again. Apparently then they can call themselves serious breeders. (Obviously not my opinion, I have tried to tell them about over-breeding, temperament issues, but because I don't have a Staffy I've been told they are not like other dogs and don't know what I'm talking about.)Serious ar$eholes more like!!

tbh you should never drown the puppys! its your choose to breeed you said you would keep them so you should do just that! its slack and i personally culd never do summit so horrible! but hey your choose your mistakes!

Puppy farms are a whole new subject all of their own! The amount of misfit dogs those abominable places turn out is criminal and the farmers should be treated as such. I visited a lady who fostered rescue ex-breeding lab bitches and a sorrier collection of assorted brown dogs you've never seen in your life. Not one looked anything like a lab but people only ever see the pups not the parents so have no idea what they're getting. I suspect the Staffy you have had problems with has been terribly badly bred, poorly socialised and not particularly well treated so it's best not to judge the breed temperament by this dog. I understand from staffy lovers that they're actually quite nice!

Don't worry I am not judging the breed temperament by this dog. I know a lady who breeds Staffys properly and they have the most wonderful temperaments. As you say this dog is badly bred and the owner can't see the problem with the dog biting, she thinks it's funny that I got bitten twice. It is not badly treated in the way of being beaten, but is badly treated because it has never been taught any manners which will only end up with it being destroyed in the future I would think.
The dog is also well known in the area for attacking other dogs, as the owner rarely has it on a lead!!

I find that shocking that she thinks it funny you were bitten! How horrid. Now I must say, I have a soft spot for correctly bred and socialised staffs but I'm of the understanding they do need experienced owners.

In regards to dog breeding, we bred two litters from our lab bitch Tina to our wonderfully bred lab Windsor. But we only did it as we knew every single pup was going to a good home. So many friends of the family were so impressed at how good these two dogs were at working were on for a long time about wanting a pup from them. After a lot of thought, we gave in. We gave every pup free and most of them are now fully trained gundogs, and a few went on to be much loved pets. My uncle took one back from the first litter for a short period of time as the owner was having trouble training it. So took her back for a while and within a month she was getting down to some proper training and is a cracking dog.

I couldn't believe she found it funny either, it makes me wonder if she would find it funny if it bites a child!?
She thought I would be used to it working in a pet shop, umm no I've never been bitten by a customers dog before, because they are usually trained to know it is unacceptable (the dogs, not the customers, lol)

I get that all the time - as a vet people think - oh its just a hazard of the job and perfectly acceptable for their dog to bite the vet! Its not acceptable ever!

Oh go for the wolf! Tie all the dogs up and see who gets chosen and who gets eaten. Or the JRT X Wolfhound.

Or just get rid of all your dogs and get some cute little puppies.

Morgan is the best best best dog I have ever owned, and she is a crossbreed.

LOL... I didn't think she was serious about the breeding bit... so ignored that...

But I did think it was worth saying that people should always be allowed to voice their opinions especially on such an emotive subject as dog breeding...

anyway... what wrong with a scottish terrier x wolfhound
