I've got a mare who is an ex international Show Jumper. She's won up to 1.30 classes, and jumped on the sunshine tour 4 times. She is a very nice mare, lovely tempermant and was sold in 2004 for £20K. I ended up with her and she was fabulous until we worked out she has got PSD. The dealer I got her off has said he would swap her, but the only horse he has come up with failed the vet and it has been dragging on now since May. So I am kind of giving up home of that and wondering what to do with the mare.

I've got a free covering with this stallion, FI Pleasure , the website is very out of date. So would only need to pay for the AI. Or I could go for another one.

My questions are....

Is it too late to put a mare in foal now?
Would I be better off waiting until next year?
When do most people want to buy foals?
Would you splash out on a bigger name stallion, or hope that you get a coloured?
What would you do?

Thank you for any help, even if it is don't do it.

would your mare complement him and/or he complement your mare?

He's graded so someone independent has looked at him but not sure I like the line of his spine - but that could be the picture

not too late to put mare in foal now providing you think she'll be fertile and as you are doing AI you could get away without the mandatory stud swabs (although it is better to know that your mare hasn't got any infections before you start)

is this stallion fertile by AI

do you still want to have a horse to ride as well as this horse in foal - i.e. in a years time could you cope with potentially 2 horses and a foal

The stallion is fertile as he's had a few by Frozen AI. I think the picture might be squashed. I have met him and he has a lovely temperment.

This is the mare, she looks better when she isn't so fat!

I do want to get a horse to ride, and we do have room at our place for an extra mare and foal.

Hi DD.

I think she looks like a cracking mare - and would definately be tempted to put her in foal. However, I would personally wait until next year now.

I would also wait until next year, even though my 2 foals were late (1st and 29th July) it was not my choice as they did go to stud in May. They were there for 3 months, so I had a very cr*ppy time

Ideally I like April foals as they can then be weaned in October. Also if we have a very hot summer next year the mare will be heavily pregnant in very hot weather....not nice really.

Shes lovely BTW, she'll have a cracking foal.

I second Amy's opinion about her standard, lovely type!

I think I would be tempted to try just for the one season this year - if it's due in this week - but definitely no later otherwise it will be a very late summer foal and not good for either of them with the heat and flies. If she takes well and good and you are ahead but if she doesn't then I would leave her again until next spring.
To a certain extent it depends on whether you intend to sell the foal or keep it; if it's for you and space is not a problem then try now, if it's to sell at weaning then I'd only try for next spring - but that's from a personal viewpoint, you might have different ideas!

She looks lovely - how is she bred?
If it were me, I would give it one chance this month, but no later.
What a shame you've ended up in this situation, but I bet she'll throw you a cracking foal, though!

Thanks, She is lovely. When she was on the Sunshine Tour she won a few 5 and 6 year old classes (different years) which someone told me are pretty big. She is ISH by Colin Diamond - King of Diamond Lines and her mum was by a US TB (Royoco).

I've no idea when she is due in season as I haven't really paid much attention, and she isn't a tarty mare so you don't really notice.

I might leave it until next year, although I really need to make a decision

The mare is very nice, but not sure about the stallion, he seems very light boned & no 2nd thigh. Can you see any of his offspring? I think I would wait until next year now & spend the time looking at stallions.

Just had a look at the stallion - and have to say it's not my cup of tea at all, and definatly not something I would consider using on anything - free or not.

There are some wonderful stallions standing around the UK - take your time and have a good old look at some if you do decide to breed from her.

DD you have a very nice mare there. Ditto AmyMay, the stallion does nothing for me. Obviously if she is as good competition mare then the stallion owners will be keen for you to use her on their stallion..........who wouldn't!!

I would be looking round for a really good stallion who will compliment her.

Re breeding her this year, most studs will be starting to close their doors shortly, so you would need to make your decision pretty soon. Perhaps you could get her scanned to see just what she is up to first, otherwise you could have a long wait and may be better off taking your time to select a good quality stallion for her for 2008.

I agree the mare is a cracking mare, the stallion doesn't do anything for me. If she was mine as she's obviously talented I'd do some research this winter into stallions. Good luck

ditto the above comments. The stallion IMO isn't nice enough and you wouldn't be doing anything to promote the quality and therefore value of the foal. I would definately do some research and find a nice quality stallion for next year...even if you end up going for a younger and therefore cheaper but very well bred stallion.

Thanks for all your comments. I was just thinking of that one because I had the free covering, but I would rather breed something better and pay for it, than end up with something that isn't going to be too good.

So any suggestions?

I don't think I could afford Tinka's Boy.
