Yesterday, i had some news, quite unexpected news - that i could be as much as 3 months pregnant myself!!!

now i was going to breed from 2 of my mares, i now need to make a decision and quickly!

has anyone on here been pregnant whilst breeding - how did you cope?

my train of thought at the moment is go for it still as i am not going to be able to ride, and they arent going to be able to do too much anyway, i will have baby before them, and when theirs are due i can still be there etc.... they both lived out last winter - just came in the odd nights so its not too much mucking out - but i do already have 7 horses to look after... (most retired)

my parents think i am mad, other half says he will support me all he can but make sure i do the right thing!

i also, have a stallion arriving this morning to cover one of the mares! am i mad for this too? hes being turned out in a seperate paddock with her so hope there isnt too much hands on i am going to have to be involved in. i've known the stallion since a yearling and had him turned out at my yard previously so am confident he should be ok.

my plan was to have 2 foals at the same time, so all being well, they will have foal company etc etc. if i'm there waiting for one to foal might as well be waiting for two!

is money! my oh only found out last night how much foals cost to produce ! (and i didnt tell him everything!) again, he says if you have the savings, its up to me, so thats ok but, babies - they must cost a bit too! i'm going into town today and am going to look at baby stuff so i will have more of an idea of £££ for them as its something i havent really got a clue about!

i think i am still in shock - especially as it could be 3 months!!!

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
Have smelling salts ready to hand at the cost of baby stuff! My poor child had a hand me down crib, buggy and a whopping great Silver Cross pram (no-one has those anymore) and never knew the difference although our pockets did! Family allowance just about covers the cost of nappies

As soon as I found out I was preganant I put my mare in foal, rode her until I was almost full term, it was a great solution, we both foaled as it were, she was out at grass and I was too knackered to have done anything with her anyway. By the time I was ready to start riding again the foal was strong enough to run along side and we were all happy. It would have been better if she was at home, but as it was the yard was within walking distance and very cheap.

I would do the same again, it worked really well for me. Keeping the horses out will save you a tremendous amount of work and time, it will be winter when you are heavily pregnant and perhaps really not feeling like mucking out and chucking heavy rugs about.

How are you feeling? Not sick or anything ghastly? Good Luck.

Me too! Just had my baby 12 days ago the foal was born 9 weeks ago.

For me i was lucky i had a groom and my mum to do foal watch cos i was too tired to do it. Also trying to hold foaly and wash off poo is incredibly difficlt at 8+ months.

Your timing sounds better than mine though!!!

Congrats on your pregnancy

Thanks HHOs - its really reasured me!

the stallion arrived saturday morning and they are out together - i dont think my mare actually likes him! i had a choice of 3 for her and it was between a chestnut and bay - i went for the chestnut - maybe a mistake lol!
i've been a nit naughty and been playing with the stallion (with OH stood at the gate worrying!) and hes still a cutie as he was when i had him turned out at mine as a yearling.
As for my other mare, i plan to call the vets on monday to book swabs etc

anyway - i'll keep it a short post as we are off to Mammas and Pappas and Mothercare today!

thanks for the replies and congratulations eventing_chick on your newborn!

When I was pregnnt with my eldest daughter (2 1/2 now) I had 3 mares in foal as well (my pregnancy was the reason we initially started breeding as I wouldn't be riding for a while) and I found it hard work with the foal watch and a newborn. Typically she just started sleeping through the night and then I was having to set the alarm every 2 hours to check on the mares!! Very tiring!

Then I got pregnant again when she was only 4 months old so went through another pregnancy alongside my mares and once again had to combine foal watch with a young baby!

This year has been the first year I've been on foal watch and my children haven't been babies!!
