I used a knotted halter with the Pessoa adjusted to merely suggest it would be more comfortable not to do a giraffe impression. It worked with a very naturally upside down horse. I would not use one with a bit personally.

I lunge in a rope halter. I've turned my pessoa into an equi ami and will use that occasionally and add a bridle in that instance but still lunge off the halter.

Would always prefer a cavesson especially with green/young horses because if they spook or try to run away you don't want to pull them in the mouth. But I don't have an issue lunging in a bridle if I have to I'm just careful.

I do tend to use a Pessoa (it's been recommended by my physio to encourage him to work correctly as he's very upside down) but I know you can't really attach these to a cavesson so I was thinking of putting a cavesson over a bridle and bit (with no noseband)

Lunged with dually and two lunge lines, with outside going through stirrup leather and round quarters and the inside from dually ring to hand.

Its a much better bit of kit than a pessoa. It will do the same thing but without socking them in the gob every stride :)

I wouldn't use a Pessoa, ever. I lunge mostly in a headcollar, sometimes off the bridle if the horse is advanced. I haven't used a lunging cavesson for decades, they are seldom well made these days, and too bulky and badly fitted to work as they are allegedly supposed to do.
The French / Iberian ones are much less cumbersome / heavy .. I don't like the heavy ones either and there ones that are better made than others.

I have to say that I would ditch any physio or other bodyworker who ever suggested the use of a Pessoa . Horrid things that do so much harm.

The equi ami is a far better piece of kit, though whether it is actually possible to bodge together a correctly acting equi ami from a Pessoa I don't know. An equi ami is very simple in principle, though, but the sliding loop must work freely.

Though in practice nowadays I usually just lunge off a headcollar.

I kept the back part, made the sliding loops from the ends of that, with the addition of a clip and then bodged the front bit from the stretchy rope left. I do keep meaning to order some stretchy rope so I can replace the front bit with one continuous piece, but thats mainly as it looks untidy with the joins!

I've marked up the pessoa and equiami pics so you can see which bits I used.

the important bit as stated above is the loop. I repurpsed the exisiting pessoa fittings to make it, with the addition of a clip and an O ring. Took me about 20mins and most of that was faffing about getting the rope the right length. Total cost was about £3 inc postage

For an established horse I nearly always lunge off the bridle. My preference is to use 2 reins and a roller. I would not choose to use a pessoa.

I used to use a Pessoa under physio instruction and I attached to the bridle. I found he was less likely to stretch right over his back and became very pokey behind. I haven’t used it in years.

I’ve also got an Equi-Ami I’m still on the fence regarding it’s usefulness.

Pessoas don't have the best name by the sounds of it on here! My instructor swears by them also.

I was thinking of changing to the Equi Ami....

I very rarely use side reins, once in a blue moon. i have some ancient cheap webbing ones with markers stitched on so I can adjust them evenly but I normally use 2 long reins.
Ah gottcha! I may try this - I always get in a fiddle with 2 long reins!!!
