I do accept that this is a very lazy post, but I have begun reading the rule book and am confused already! I am hoping to affiliate next year, although we are not ready yet. So just a couple of questions please:

(1) Can I compete on day tickets as with British Eventing? I have an idea that if I compete on a ticket any result won't count for any area/regional finals qualification - is this correct? (yes I am being optimistic there :D )

(2) What do the Bronze/Silver/Gold levels mean? I have never affiliated before and neither has my horse so I realise we will be bronze level, but what does that actually mean?

If someone could explain in idiot terms it would be much appreciated.....

Lol it'll be a whole different rule book by the spring anyway, if the last 12 months is anything to go by.

Essentially the sections go as follows : bronze and silver can qualify for area festivals. Silver and gold can qualify for regionals. There are some exceptions, most relevant to you is there's no regional at prelim gold.

You pretty much have to get your qualifications in the section you intend to compete at in AFs or regionals, so e.g you can't use a score from gold to qualify for a bronze AF.

the sections are designed so that those new to a level can start in bronze, then progress according to achievement. In theory it should level the playing field a bit.

In day shows, rosettes tend to be per section and prize money is awarded overall.

Iirc you can compete prelim gold without a ticket, just assoc membership (eta nope looks like that rule is gone for 2017) but if you think you want to 'do' BD you may as well join via one of the various discounted schemes (quest etc) and do it properly ;) be a shame to get the scores but not be able to use them!

Thank you milliepops, I nearly messaged you on FB but thought that was taking the **** a bit too far :D

So when I enter for an affiliated prelim class (for example) I have to state what level I would like to compete at? (e.g. Bronze/Silver/Gold level?)

I will go ahead and join I think, is membership Jan-Dec or is it 12 months from when you join?

Hehe happy to help

It's 12 months from when you join. Check out the various membership options, you can do quest or a 6 month trial, all sorts. They usually offer a discount on full membership at the BD convention too (3 weeks time at Hartpury ;) )

Yes you state on the entry which section you are entering.

The rules are getting really hard to keep on top of but tbh as a new member with no history you can't go too far wrong

One other thing, you keep your qualifications even if you move sections or levels, on the whole , so as a newbie it makes sense to start at bronze and hoover up what you can and then try silver if you fancy going for regional instead.

Thank you, really appreciated :) My instructor is going to the BD convention so can't offer me a lesson that weekend.... leaves me at a loose end I suppose... :D
