My boy had been going well but started to do something strange with his back near hind. Almost like shiver but without the pulling/shiver part, only in his stable and didn't occur when ridden or during rein back. He wasn't lame and was still working well (we only school once a week in a lesson for 45 min) 20 min schooling a week on my own and the rest is hacking out, this all keeps him mentally in tune
Around June time I was running late and a friend of mine tacked up my horse. A few seconds after she had put his saddle on he went mad, bronking etc. She calmed him, started again and he was fine. The lesson was good etc and he showed no more signs of this until recently, which also coincided with the strange leg thing.
I decided to get him checked at the vet when one day I went to put the saddle on and he froze, and then trotted around me grunting when I put on his saddle.
I explained to the vet's what had happened so they kept him in overnight. After lunging him work up etc it was decided he was sound in front, but bilaterally lame, although try as I might I could not see this. There interpretation of his hind leg lameness was that on the lunge he was lazy behind?
Anyway, long story short
They nerve blocked etc and found slight degeneration in his meniscus in his stifles. He was treated and came out the other side a new larger striding horse
I was allowed to start back riding and work on muscle on his core to improve him etc.
I rode for 15 min in walk last Thursday and he was a good calm boy and all seemed well, however there was the niggle in my mind because when I'd tacked him up he grunted and definitely felt something when I put his saddle on?
Friday came and I decided to tack up outside the stable, all went well, no obvious discomfort when saddle was put on. I mounted did up my girth again and walked approx 4 steps when all hell let loose!!!!
He bronked and I went flying head first into concrete
One broken hat and a trip to A& E later I rang the vets to tell them and he's now in again and having x-rays today
I just wondered this: I had his saddle four years ago, a year later it was rechecked and flocked. Then re flocked and checked this year by a different saddler. Although the vet has said his saddle looks ok (he bronked on the lunge for her yesterday when saddled) it could be pinching? My question is this, would a saddle that has been ok for the past four years, checked regularly by ''master saddlers'' have this much of an effect on a horse?
I do know horses change shape etc according to work load and that's why he's always had his saddle checked. I'm now doubting the last saddle fitters flocking/fitting?
Just thought there might be someone else out there with similar story?
