for those unlucky people who have broken their leg, in horse related accidents. how did you manage when it came to start riding again. were you nervous for just keen to get back on!
I was unlucky kicked last week and broke my tib & fib. it's all been pinned and plated but I've got 3-4 months on cructhes. and not sure how I feel about it all.

any experiences out there?

thanks

I broke both my feet and used to ride with both feet in plaster! It was walking that was a problem but we used to have a great mounting block so I could just put my leg over without using stirrups and I was away. Once the plasters came off I never had any worries about riding as it suddenly using stirrups after 4 months was fantastic!
You'll be fine, people have unlucky accidents all the time just take it slowly and dont push yourself to fast x

I broke my tibia after trying to land on my feet after coming off over a jump. (Pilon fracture to distal tibia) I have a plate in and broke it 12 months ago.

I was none weight bearing for 6 weeks then it took 6 weeks to get off the crutches and walking again. It was 5 months before I got back in the saddle again and I built my time up from 5 mins. I can now do just over an hour in the saddle before my ankle hurts too much.

I have sprenger stirrups and a pair of ariats which support my leg but have elastic lace front at ankle so I have some give on swollen days.

I got to 8 months post op without too much pain or problems but then started with constant pain and now back on diclofenac and back under the consultant.

Don't push yourself if it hurts, the saying no pain, no gain doesn't fit with a broken leg!! If it hurts its because your doing too much and get it checked out asap if the pain is constant.

I can recommend the site www.mybrokenleg.com for your recovery time as it is so informative and some great tips and people on there!

Good luck a speedy healing :D

Not really what you want to hear, after a broken leg long story 4 years on lost it,but could not wait to get back on, as had spent years in a cage to try and sort it so all I wanted was to get back on again. Now have a three step block which helps with getting on. Just take your time you have nothing to prove so when the time is right for you then give it a go,but do not rush things and do not expect too much too soon, which was the mistake I made. Good luck with it the time will fly by and before you know it you will be back on board. All the best :)

firstly so sorry to hear that! hope it mends well and soon. hugs

I fractured tib and fib 3 years ago falling from horse landing on feet. I was back riding 3 months later with DR's ok however I hate to say but hospital made a bad job of surgery and 8 months later it almost colapsed. So 18 mths I had replacement ankle, which came lose 12 months later  I am now 4 months post op again and doing great'!!!!

I had no trouble geting back to riding, yeah it was sore and sometimes painful BUT I have RA so am used to that anyway

Right now it is as good as it gets and hardly and pain:D

I broke tib and fib 8 years ago, and have pins in. I still have pain but it is manageable and as long as I can take foot out stirrup and stretch it every so often I am fine. I can't do extended periods of rising trot or jumping, but cope OK.

I was very naughty when I broke it though - I threw crutches away after 6 weeks, got osteomyelitis, and it has never been right since. It also healed slightly squint. So do what your consultant tells you!! :)

Broke my tib and fib in December of last year. First sat on a horse again 4 months later, which was okay but ankle wasn't very flexible (its amazing the stiffness you get from having it in plaster for 6 weeks!) and rising trot was a no no. Now riding regularly and no problems, just getting off from the giant I have to be careful to land on my good leg because its not as shock absorb-ey as it was. I was never worried about damaging it riding, but I do guard it against kicks after my consultant warned me off contact sports, what with havin g a plate in! :D

You have my sympathy, its not nice!
