Charlie has a Small scar on his back leg that is at least 6 years old, probably older. The trouble is when I put boots on him they seem to rub the scar so it becomes open.

This is what it looked like today after being ridden for 45 minutes with boots on

It's not deep but I think it must be quite sore for him. It does seem to heal pretty quickly but as soon as I put boots on again the same thing happens.

Obviously you are now all going to say 'Don't boot him' BUT..... he does need them as he brushes his back legs.

Can you recommend anything that would help? Maybe something to strengthen the skin?

Terps... or urine.. as grose as it sound will both toughen the skins..

Otherwise, Have you thought of trying fleece bandages?

Lol, That does sound gross! Think I would give the Urine one a miss!

Would Terps not sting on open wounds?

I haven't tried bandages, I don't get on great with them but may have to use them as a last resort.

Could you use a sausage boot whilst it is healing? Then use a wool lined (not synthetic fleece) boot once healed. Surgical spirit hardens the skin but only use after it has healed.

Camrosa would strengthen the skin and make the scar more flexible so it wouldn't be as likely to break and become painful.

I would also suggest trying the wool line N.E.W. boots, they are fantastic, my girl has awful scarring on her back legs and in the summer they are liable to rubbing. I bath her legs in camrosa shampoo, apply the cream ince or twice a week and use these boots and the scars are absolutely fine.

I have the NEW fleece lines brushing boots, and the fleece is really thick and soft. I'm sure they wouldn't rub.

RE the scar itself, my TB got a pressure rub on her hind cannon bone three years ago (vet applied pressure bandage too tight), and although it has healed with white hair, once fully healed it hasn't reopened at all. I hope this is the same for you. She has worn all sorts of boots in this time (and in fact wears legacy breathable boots every day in the field) and I haven't had any probs at all.

Good luck.

Fiona
