Some may remember our freddie came with a nasty bucking habit and whilst I managed to stay aboard, it was really beginning to affect my nerve!

Everytime you pushed for a little hard work he argued with a huge buck or series of big ones!

In my desperation I ordered one of those "Buck Stops" for £19, it came the next day, it is similar to daisy rein but does not come into action at all unless the horse actually tries to plant its nose down to buck!

Well, amazingly having hacked him in it and today schooling, pushing him big time to see if he could and would buck when I asked some harder questions, he tried hacking the other day to buck but gave up and settled really well...and tonight, he had a hissy fit in the school when he couldnt interupt the schooling by throwing himself around!

It doesnt hurt them, it was certainly better for me as I relaxed more and he ended up doing some fantastic work once he had tried to throw his toys out of the pram!!

So if anyone has a "bucking" problem, caused entirely by hi jinks and stubborness, I wholeheartedly recommend them.

However, if you havent checked backs, teeth and other physical bits n bobs, get that done first!!! If you are then convinced it is naughtyness or evasiveness, go for it!!!

BTW it does not affect their outline whatsoever if fitted properly it literally comes into play when they nose dive to buck by lifting the bit slightly higher in the mouth as a rider would do to stop them doing it!! - meaning you dont have to think about the bucking!!

I plan to leave it on for many months until he simply forgets...ok well maybe it may happen!

hehe congrats that it worked!!

i used a daisy rein on JJ int he summer as he used to put his nose to the ground and gallop off bucking, put this on and he had a major hissy fit that he couldn't get his own way and he went perfectly

hope he does forget about bucking!!

Tell me more, i've never heard of this. My daughter's pony puts in nasty bucks and as she's only 8yrs she struggles to stop her doing it. She rides in a daisy rein, but it does interfear with the ponies outline.

Monty Roberts used one of these at his demo at Keysoe last month. Looked to be very effective!!
Would be worried about inexpericened people using it though - there will always be someone who thinks £19 is alot better than having their horse throughly checked over (as you obviously have done).

I'm sure they work for some but I would be worried hacking out in one, if a horse stumbled or unbalanced they need to stretch their neck to rebalance. Just my personal opinion though and I'm sure they are useful for a fallen angel!

Hmmmm....i was saddened to see Monty Roberts use this device at his demo, & im even more saddened to see it is now easily available & can be used by just anybody.
Whilst i think it was great marsden has gone to the trouble to have their horses teeth, back, etc checked out. There will be many others that do not, & just go for the quick fix cheap gadget!
I would much rather have an Ra or more exsperienced person out to help me get to the real root of the problem, rather than resort to using this!

Where do you get them from? Hopefully I wont need them any more

, but my friends mare is as good as gold unless she is behind by more than a few feet when cantering on a hack (she just gets cross about not being in front!) These could be a real help to her as I think her nerve is taking a battering!

I think its a brilliant idea to get a stubborn horse working - i can see how it would be worrying to think people would use them before getting their horses checked though but tbh thats the same with every gadget out there and theres absolutely nothing anyone can do about it - you cannot vet a home before you sell them a gadget - i think this has been said before!
I think if it truly is naughtiness, stubborness, its a brilliant way of getting them out of the habit!

I must say im really sad to see so many of you are prepared to buy this buck stop & think your horses are just naughty & stuborn! Horses generally do not buck for no reason. Vets & vettings seem to miss underlying back problems. If i had a chiro come out & say there was nothing, i would be inclined to get a second oppinion. & have the dentist out.
I personally find a manipulator is better than a 'back' person, as they find muscle knots, that vets & chiros miss.
I recently worked with a pony that bucked the young off when i was giving her a lesson. The chiro said there was nothing wrong, but a manipulator found a huge knot where the cantle rests, hense the problem......!

There is almost nothing in your post which I agree with - which is unusual.
I am a firm believer that many if not most behavioural problems can be explained by bad handling, pain or remembered pain. But I also have 40 years experience of ponies who buck because they know they can get their riders off, and ponies who buck because they want to get their own way.
Anything which gives a child the upper hand with a bucking pony is a good thing to my mind.
And to claim that a manipulator is preferable to a chiropractor (back person)and can spot problems which a vet might miss - well words fail me!!!

Ty had major bucking fits last year and his saddle was checked and physio out.

Tack got stolen and since we've had a new saddle touch wood he hasn't had a fit yet - he does still kick out when excited (while you're on top) but seems to have cured the problem.

Not really into gadgets though as sometimes they can mask other things - would want a second opinion before using something like this but maybe that's just me!

Sorry Siennamum, but its becoming more & more known that on a vetting, often underlying back problems are missed!
Yes ponies do learn to get their young riders off & if it works the first time they do tend to try their luck again. Some horses will buck out of excitement, but i still believe more times it is from pain or discomfort of some kind, or simply frustration that are constanly getting pulled in the mouth, flapping legs never given them a moments peace etc.
whenever i have had a horse or pony that bucks, never have i wanted to resort top a buck stop, id much rather get to the real root of the problem. & if you look hard enough you will find one!
Monty Roberts uses a buck stop in his demos, but he does state it should only be used by an expert & as a last resort..... Yet so many of you seem to think that is a great gadget to have hanging in your tack room, like a lungee bungee or long reins....That is what i find sad!

I don't agree that underlying back problems are getting missed more, or that underlying back problems are getting noticed more or in fact that underlying back problems are more common.
I think in fact ,that there are more and more people who want to put their animal's behavioural problem down to a back issues, and there are more and more people around with pseudo qualifications who are happy to attribute all sorts of issues down to vague back problems, and then charge a fortune to fix them.
In fact I've seen very few actual back problems which in fact weren't issues relating to tack, incorrect riding, lower limb issues or teeth. A manipulator is the last person I would speak to about any of these issues, and for most of them, the vet is the first person I would speak to.
Where do you get your statistics that vets are missing back problems in vettings?
I agree by the way that this is yet another gadget that will probably be misused, still think there are lots of kids who suffer from naughty bucking ponies - whatever the cause of the original buck and have known a few ponies I would like to have used it on myself!!!

Oh I disagree on this one - its a daisy rein for adults and is pretty harmless.

Resorting to gadgets does not mean you are a failure. Often horses that buck frequently have no problems at all - bar one their initial training where someone let them get away with it.

Back people and "fixing knots in your horses back" - give me strength. Like a human a massage is lovely but a temporary fix and will never 'cure' a true problem. Most back problems are derived from the rider - however back people that tell the truth aren't popular.
