I don't think anyone could be sure the behaviour was caused by brain damage, and it's entirely possible all of it was learned. My guess (and I don't know) is that Buck raised this possibility to make the owner a) feel better and b) do the sensible thing.I think buck explained that brain damage after oxygen deprivation at birth was likely. He also pointed out that although it would never be a world beater it could have been a nice reliable little horse with the right owner.
Sadly this little fella got an idiot.
