Hi all, looking for your always excellent advice again. How did I survive without y'all before I joined the forum??

Mare is quite lame on her near hind in trot. Does not really show in walk. I'm gonna put a poultice on and see if I can draw anything out. If not, then I'll need to go down the farrier and vet route, but fingers crossed a bit of rest and poultice will do the trick.
Anyhoo, I have heard of a few inexpensive poultice options. For example, I have heard of using sugar or epsom salts, or even table salt to draw something out. Apparently sugar was used back in the old days. Anybody used these? Any recommendations?

Agree with above, attach to hoof using any exercise or vetrap bandage and then topped off with a chunk of plastic feed sack and some gaffer tape to keep it on and waterproof.

I do the above but use a bread bag (metalic ones are best) covered with more gaffer tape.

I think you can use bread as a poultice, but I'd prefer the nappy.

Someone was telling me about using bread the other day. Apparently you wet it and squeeze it out and apply.

Didn't go for it, more likely to have Animalintex at the yard than a loaf of white sliced.

The other one I remember from when I was a kid was bran which back in the day when everyone fed bran was always available.

And Epsom salts of course.

Im having to poultice my babes hoof this week, i bathe in salt water (table salt in boiling water then wait till cooled) then poulticed (Animalintex), cotton wool, vet wrap, gaffer tape
