So after Bugs first ODE last weekend going so well I decided to get him out to some hunter trials before winter set in too much. I entered Kingsclere with the aim of not doing any walking (we walked into the water at Pachesham) and as little trotting as possible (we trotted a fair few there too, hence our 48.5 xc time! It was his first go though and he is very green!)

We got there and walked the course and it all seemed ok. I was saddened to see that there was a funny narrow gate thing to go into and through which meant the plan for no walking was ruined from the get go as there was no way he could organise himself to go down the slope, round the corner and through the narrow bit in trot!!

We got down to the coffin and the ditch was pretty spooky. It was rather deep for a baby pony who has only jumped 2 little, shallow ditches, but there was an alternative of a corner on a curving line to a little upright. I thought I would probably go for the corner, this was cemented by watching about 5 people fall off at the ditch! This caused some delays so we went back for a snooze. Luckily Bug seems to be super chilled so he just had a sleep in the truck too!

I tacked up and went down. He had a mooch round on the buckle, then had a trot and a canter round and took it all in. He had to have a look/snort at the warm up jump as it was pretty spooky rubber matting attached to a frame, but when I suggested jumping over it all was well and he popped over!

Then it was our go. I wondered if he would be a bit more excited at the start after going XC last week...not really!

Once we got organised we cantered, yes cantered, out of the start! No trotting for us this time!!

These photos proves that, despite my diet, I still have some lbs to loose in the bum area!!!!!!!

There was a bit of the course that I was worried about because there was 2 fences going out, right next to 2 fences coming home (if you haven't been to Kingsclere you basically go out in a straight line, turn round at the top and come back in a straight line) I had my fingers crossed that we wouldn't meet anyone coming home as we were going out as I thought that was a pretty big ask for a baby pony to go it alone when another horse was coming back home. I cantered towards the fences and there wasn't 1 horse coming towards the jumps heading home...there were 2! Bug was a superstar about it and didn't even consider the idea of not going! You can hear me on the hatcam saying "come on Bug, we don't need them" or something equally as stupid!!

He carried on and jumped everything sweetly. We had to trot to 2 little rails that were on an angle but apart from that we cantered everything.

Did the corner brilliantly, although he didn't expect me to turn him to the 2nd bit so that looks funny on the headcam!!

He wobbled a bit coming up and down the steep slopes on the way home. Baby, wobbly pony, no back shoes + very steep up and downs made some pretty extreme wobbling but he jumped well and finished the course clear. I should add my BF took all the photos, he even managed to get us all in the shots!!

Heres the video of the hatcam, you will laugh at me chatting to him, hopefully you will see what I mean about the other horses going the other way, its at 1min40.

So proud of him, we were too slow for a rosette but it doesn't even matter at the moment. Im just super proud of him and how well he is taking all this new stuff that is being thrown at him.

Ive been in a dilemma all week because someone I know has asked if I might thing about selling him to someone that a few of my friends know that would be a super home, if she liked him obviously! Its a real dilemma because I had thought about selling him about now, but now Dottie is broken Im torn.

On one hand, if it was too the right person it would free up some time. Winter will be busy if he stays as Dotties rehab is pretty hardcore with tons of walking. But if he goes then Ill have nothing to do anything with. Friends have offered me horses, but its not really the same. Also if he goes then Ill have nothing to jump/compete for over a year, that's a bit depressing. Ill have Dotties sister to ride next summer but shes massive and so I doubt she will do too much. I just don't know what to do...

Plus the biggest thing is that if I keep him he will probably go lame tomorrow and if I sell him he will never take a lame step in his life and go at least 2* lolll. I know this isn't true but it feels like it is!!

So any thoughts on that would be great, although I doubt anyone can really tell me what to do, it would be nice if they could.... maybe I should just do a poll on a post and let the forum decide!!!

Ill share some funny Grottie pics, she has been allowed to go out for some grass on the rope, shes been enjoying it...

Anyway, thanks for reading x

He is such a cool dude :D Sounds like a great, confidence building outing for him!

Regarding selling him - I think you should let the people come and try him, if they like him and you think they will offer him a good home then it's probably a good time to let him go, the right homes don't come up very often! Also if you keep him are you likely to get more attached making it more difficult to sell in the future?

If you did sell him you could look at getting another project, either straight away or next Spring, that you can bring on and produce with the aim of selling it when Dots is back competing or your youngster is ready to do more. You seem to have a great eye for a horse and do a fab job bringing youngsters on so I think it would be a good way to go!

If you are just keeping him 'for something to ride' and given you were thinking if selling anyway, then if the right home comes along at the right price then IMO sell.
He looks a lovely chap but if he doesn't set your world alight then don't hold onto him for the wrong reasons x

My friend said I should see if this lady wants him and if she does just get another one to back and start again. Part of me likes this idea but the other part is yearning to have a more grown up horse.

I seem to have done so many babies recently and knowing I still have Belle to do makes me want to have a break from neckstrap based wobbling round!!!

He's growing on me! He's so not what I'm used to having. I like them clever and sharp and he's sensible and quiet so he's taken some getting used too. I always had it in my head that he would probably need a new mum when Belle was 4 so I think I had distanced myself from him a little bit too.

I'm liking riding him, enjoying competing him but a big part of it is that he's easy to have about. He's no bother to keep and I know if I don't ride him for a week or so he won't hold it against me or eject me when I do stuff on him!! That's probably an easier option for a winter where I'll be pretty busy with Dot rather than getting another baby baby into start.

Plus if I end up without him the Belle will have no one to go out with for the time Dot is on boxrest, which is agessssss :(

What if you got a green 5 or 6 year old though? Something that doesn't need the time to mature physically but needs to get out and about to see the world. Or an ex-racer?

He looks like such a dude!

I also would let the lady come and see him. She might not like him/you might not like her and then all your stressing would be for nothing. Do you know anyone who has a horse that could go out with Belle while Dot is in? It might be nice to have an easier winter and then you could always get something else in the Spring. Even if you aren't competing with Dot's rehab and getting Belle going you might decide that's enough.

I've done a few ex racers and have gone off them a little since the last one ;) I love baby/green horses but I'm feeling like having a little break from until doing Bellie. Constant wobbling round, planning your weeks and so many new situations where you wonder how it will go and how much you will need to grab the neckstrap!!

The fact I'm thinking of reasons for my slightly more grown up baby pony to stay says quite a lot about what I want at this moment in time!!

My friend (who bred Bug!) said I should sell him and have his full brother who's 4, then it really could be starting again!!!

If she wants him. I'd price him as what you'd like for him and then not budge. If they still want him, sell him and if not keep going? If he's a seller, then sell when you can! if nothing else if we have a foul winter with snow and ice you'll be glad for the break...

He looks so smart, he'll make someone a perfect little RC/PC horse!

I think he's fab! I'd be seriously interested myself if I hadn't recently found one. Love the headcam - what a nice course for a baby to go round :)

I agree, let them come and try him and you'll get a gut feel as to whether you want to part with him maybe.

I did suggest this to my friend but she said unless I was sure I was happy to sell him she didn't want to waste the other persons time. She said just wait and see how I feel in a few days. Yeah that's the flip side, I think winter would be ok with him gone but then the idea of starting again in the spring with another wobbly one isn't that appealing. The summer would be pretty tedious too, but maybe ok with the 2 girls to keep me occupied.

I have sent a PM.

I didn't get one...

She hasn't been to see him yet so it might all be pie in the sky. He was only really going to be a seller in the spring, or about now if Dottie hadn't been injured. Hes just nice to have about. Its a funny one to call as I have no real idea about what to do. Is it worth keeping him to so I can have some fun rather than a long boring winter of box rest and crazy amounts of walking.

He is fab...sigh. Maybe I should just flip a coin!!

The more he grows on you then the more difficult it will be to sell him (emotionally) when the time comes that you need to. And that is assuming he doesn't have a whoopsie that makes him more difficult to sell in that timeframe.

You will always be able to find a temporary lodger to act as a companion if needed, you could likely charge for a temporary lodger and use the money to go for a the odd lesson on a schoolmaster to tide you over?

I'd set a non-negotiable price on him, top end of his market value, and if someone will pay then great and if not then it's not problem he can stay.

That is the most sensible thing to do I guess then if she does want him it will feel like the smart thing to do. I wonder what top end of his value would be.... Time for some similar type of horse advert looking I guess!

What Firewall said! Tbh, he seems such a lovely easy person to have about the place, why worry if you don't have much time over winter. An easy few months doings bits n bobs as you have time/energy won't do him any harm. In the spring he'll be that much more physically and mentally mature - you'll be well away! Seems like a no brainer to me.

I think he is lovely, if it were me I would keep him, you know and like him and I assume he gets on with your other horse who he is turned out with it and you will have something you know you like to ride over the winter and compete next summer.
