Bungee vs Side reins...

Depends on why you want to use them really. You should only use side reins for lunging, not for ridden work :) what are you trying to achieve/fix with them?

i used to use elasticated side reins and breaching (think tail bandage concept but actually the back end of a pessoa copy that's been cut off from front end - def helps horse engage on lunge better ;))

but i was not overly happy with them... she would lean or evade - not accept contact - now i use a lungie but not quite in the normal fashion (saerch on here for kerelli's post about adapting a lungie bungie - far easier than me trying to describe it ;)) and she's working really well with it - def noticing a difference in her ridden work, strength and top line with it too

saying that - side reins didn't work with this horse - but i have used them happily and effectivly with other horses - its what works for the horse rather than a hard and fast rule i'd say ;)

ETA - i'm talking for lunging here - not ridden

I would prefer to use neither ;)

Depends on the horse and what your wanting to acheive, so it's a question you can't really answer.

lunging I would prefer to use a pessoa if I was going to lunge in anything........ as it engages both front and back end.

If I didnt have one, then side reins but this is only as I have never used a bungee before......

And never EVER ride in them! :)

a lot is personal preferance-i would never use a pessoa as it socks them in the mouth each stride, and has a side to side action due to being tightened by the stride of each hind leg in turn, i know 3/4 horses that have developed a side to side head nod, in order to avoid the sock in the teeth!

i use an upside down bungee-run it through a loop in centre of girth(baler twine or old flash strap), up through bit rings and clip on to D rings at side of roller, instead of using it over head.
i find this way enourages them to stretch TO the contact and not sit behind it.

my mare really worked badly in a pessoa - had all sorts of people telling me i'd put it on wrong, i'd over tightened it. too loose etc etc etc - tried many differnet varitions and still didn't like how it worked... i know some hroses go well in it though...but i worry that people can see a pessoa in a very blinkered 'can do no wrong' fashion... rather than evaluating it for the individual horse and how it goes in it...

Agree with PS - would never use a pessoa. I have used an equi ami though (kind of the same idea as a pessoa but is a self righting system).

I prefer the bungie rein myself - has enough give to encourage horse to work into the contact but does not fix horse's head. Depending on what I am trying to work on, use it in different ways.

o god yes i agree that it does not suit some horses!!! but in those cases I agree you need to find other techniques.

I only said i wouldnt use a bungee as i have never been taught how to use one, if I was and thought ahh this is quite good I may prefer to use that than a pessoa etc...... I don't know :)

If you want something for lunging, then Laura B used this rope thing that attaches to the bit and goes through the font legs and then goes over (out of th front legs) the back. It's a really nifty device. Someone on here made one from draw reins, I would but I don't own draw reins and but have been meaning to buy one -- A tack shop in Ciren apparently does them, but look on horsehero for a video of her using it.
Or attach draw reins to the bit (each side) push the lines through the font legs and out the other side and tie up over the back.

(I could be sneaky and let you have my login info if you want it to watch vid on horsehero, as you have to subscribe to see vids, pm me if you want)

Anyhows it looks very good!!
