Last year, Reggie was one of the unfortunate horses who came a cropper over unfixed XC fences at a local hunter trial.

He went back this year to do the 90cm. On walking it, Al decided to just do the 1m. Course photos here:

It was fairly hefty though, with some Novice fences chucked in for good measure and many many skinnies. It was just going to be a learning round though... There was mild apprehension over these:

As last year he stopped and Al came off at the smaller version of them, marking the start of the skinny saga.

As they started warming up, the heavens opened and within minutes they were both soaked through, poor beggars! Set off very steadily as he had no studs in and isn't very fit yet.

Well, he was the biggest star around. Locked on to every fence and pretty much read Al's mind- they were on a misser of a stride through the pig arcs and she lost her reins and her line, but he stayed locked on and pinged through. Even the best schoolmaster would have been justified in skipping out, but he was a pro :D He made everything look stupidly easy overall!

Of course, having been a water baby all his life (we've had to actually drag him out of the water before when he's been playing in it at the end of a schooling session...) he decided that he was wet enough, thanks and nearly refused to go in. He's never done that before, and hopefully won't try it again!

This was the only other sticky moment that's hard to appreciate in the video- poor pony slipped on take off and couldn't get his legs up in time so chested the fence. His momentum took him over and he used his insane 5th leg skills to land as though nothing had happened. Very clever pony, and I impressed Al stayed on. The photographer got it on camera and it looks marginally unrecoverable. Message me if you want to see the impressive recovery, but it's watermarked so can't go on here :)

Al has 20% off any purchases with SupaStuds this year, so is treating herself to the posh package :D

To top off a lovely day, they even came 5th (they were very steady, as you can see so didn't expect a placing). I think Al is still beaming about how clever her boy was :D

Some photos for your delectation:

(Reg went on a flier to this, in a "I LOVE this!" sort of way. Al said his ears were pricked the whole way round and he was full of his own importance about how very good he was :D Very pleased for them!

I can offer a lot of tea and oat cakes for getting this far- I am doing many reports/ lab write ups but also have many concerts to play in so everything is getting a bit middle-of-the-night-ish!!

Go reggie! :D and Al. He just eats them fences up  makes them all look tiny.

Are they going to be at ely on the 1st?

Super pics and clever chap. Tea and cake please, leaving out the oat..

Oatcakes are the best revision food ever though! Thank you- mum stood on the mound in the howling wind and nearly got blown over many times, hence the occasional wobbles! He was fabby :D

He is HUGE though- 16.3hh, and all leg! He loves his XC, he wa sso happy to be going he was bouncing along grinning to himself! This event was his first ever XC round in 2010 and he did the 65cm pairs so it's especially nice to revisit it :)

And I think so- it only goes to 3' though which is a bit of a bummer. I think she'll go anyway as the PC area eventing is there this year so maximum exposure is wanted! I'll be there as well to cheer them on- will you be about?

Yeah I know but still thats impressive fence shrinking powers .

Yeah hopefully we will be there :D probably only doing the baby course as theres no 2'6 and although he does bigger schooling it will only be his second course. Unless I find some one to follow round the 2'9 but I think the only person I know who would be ok to give us a lead will be doing the same class as Al.

Well done...looks fab.

Just asking: was it the water on top of the hill he didn't like? It is well know to be a tricky one. Horses don't expect water to be at the top of a hill...this would rarely happen in nature and so it takes them by surprise. You see a lot of mis-haps at that water.
So if it was that one tell Al not to worry too much and ride her next water complex with confidence and not to expect it to happen again. :) That way hopefully he will forget all about it!

:)

Supercool Reg - wahey :D. He looks so keen at all the jumps - apart from the water and he was fine going back through it again. I think Bubblegum is right, he just hesitates for a second from the shock of seeing it. Good to see all Al's hard work is paying off so handsomely :)

Nonsense. We'll tow you round the 2'9''. As long as you can go in front to pop into the water BH will pull you round the rest. 2'9'' is only ickle for him with his long legs and he'll have had a run round the week before. It might not be quick but I would imagine he'll pop round happily enough!

Lolo, love Reg, he looks super cool. Hopefully see you at Ely :)

He does make it look easy! Is your sister riding him in just a snaffle bridle with no martingale or anything? *impressed*.

Classy Reginald!! Your sister deserves all the success I hope she gets with him because shes done a super job, to take an out of the field 9yr old scrawney ex racer and bring out his potential like she has done is amazing. I only wish I was as brave as her!

:)

Whoop Whoop - looking good :D

How wet was it !!!

They were so cool :D The tack has only just dried out enough for a proper clean- usually, Al does it the evening of a comp so it's all done and dusted... At least it wasn't snowing though :S

Awesome! Well done Reggie and Al :) What a good lad - did not look nice conditions for xc :o

I reckon Reg thinks any conditions are nice ones for XC when he doesn't have to do any stressage first :D I felt for mum standing on the mound- she's tiny and it was howling gales!

What I used to do for pairs comps was tell the secretary I wanted a pair if anyone fancied making one up- might be worth asking round? I was often used as Cheeky was such a decent lead XC so might be worth a bash? If nothing else, from your schooling photos you've done most of the course for the 2'9...

Yay :D WEll DONE!! Looks horrible conditions so just think how easy it will all be in the sunshine :)
Q

I hope so! He's got an interschool ODE soon at Poplar and it's always grim there with the dressage on top of a hill so as I'm on chief cheerleader duties I am hoping for at least double figure temperatures!

Thanks :) Yes- he's always been very pro about going in (Burnham is our local, so have done several runs/ clinics there) and usually Al has to really check him to ensure he doesn't overdo the enthusiastic entry. We think she was just slightly too laid back for his first sighting of water in a competition this year! Next time she'll probably go for it and he'll do his best splashing through :D

Thank you :) We think he just had a speshul moment- he's prone to them... Poor pony! Got to love his attitude- he is so can do about everything, even the skinnies :D

Lolo, love Reg, he looks super cool. Hopefully see you at Ely :)

I'll be wearing a hoody with the phrase "Erection specialist" (civil engineers are funny funny people... It;s our course slogan!) on the back clutching a camera and gibbering nervously :D Wave if you see me!

He's lovely, too cool :D

Well done, lovely vid, pics and report - looks like the two of them ahould have great fun this season :)

Thank you to you both! I love writing reports about them, just totally paranoid I come across as too 'proud mummy'- ironic as I'm the sister and therefore clearly there's a lot of sibling rivalry :D

He's got a flash on- doesn't like drop nosebands or grakles. But other than that he's in a happy mouth snaffle and has a breastplate and a neckstrap on... He doesn't need anything else, and it means there's one less thing to clean!

And thank you- when people say stuff like that it means a lot to her as she has worked hard with him. He's such a total pro though- he wants to please and now just seems to get what he needs to do in order to do so :) What you've done with Jae is just as impressive- he looks like a warmblood he's so strong now, and unlike Reg he's not one of those chunky TBs and his dressage is just wow! (plus, her current attitude is "I want to do all the dangerous stuff now when I'm bouncier", hence her gap year(s) coming up- bravery and insanity are clearly interchangeable!).

ETA- no flash! I got confused as he was in one all of last year but he's gone so well without one schooling this year they're trying to go without :) Plus, Al couldn't find it so decided she couldn't be bothered :D Oh to be a teenager!
