Does it take to get into the system?? I ask because my youngster was sore on his front today, could feel no heat no swellings BUT he did have a stone wedged between his frog and horn...anyway removed the said stone, but he was still short and not fully weight bearing,so gave him half a hour still the same, brought him in gave him a feed and 1 bute, within 15-20 mins he was fine, still a bit sore but defo weight bearing and looking a lot brighter! so does bute get into the system that quick or are we hopefull he just has a bruised sole!!

No it should take longer. Probably was the stone.

It worries me a bit that someone administers bute without the vet, and doesn't know how it works.

Mine's on two bute a day to see if there's any change in her slight lameness and vet told me not to ride for 3 days so it can get into her system then see how she is.

Sorry, you didn't say they were involved, just said you brought him in and gave him bute. I also thought the vet would have told you how long it would take. I guess I've seen too many self-proclaimed vets when I had DIYs. Glad you had consulted a vet. Hope he is ok.

No sorry...not meaning to be snappy :o just thought that bute would take longer to get into system as he wasnt jabbed with pain relief
..so was kind of hoping that he was feeling better in himself!! and he was just bruised..will no doubt know more tomorrow,

A single bute on an average sized horse is a bit like taking an aspirin for a headache. If it's going to help at all it should make some difference within 24 hours. But as bute is a NSAID, it has a cumulative effect as well, in that it dampens down inflammation. So you might need to continue for a few more days to see the full benefit.

BOF he has 7 days worth...I think because I've seen such a marked improvement of having 1 sachet, and him nfine after 30mins ish was kind of hoping it isnt something too serious..he's my two year old bubba :) vet is coming back Monday if there was no improvement.

How is he today?

Brought this up again (went to bed last night) to say that my horse stood on a stone while cantering up a hill and bruised her sole. Within ten minutes she was lame, so I got off and lead her home, and within another ten minutes she was hopping on three legs. I was only half a mile from home, and would have rung for someone to come and pick me up with the trailer if it hadn't been a work day. We put her in on a deep bed after tubbing the hoof for half an hour. When I brought her out to do it again later she was miles better, and by morning she was 100% sound. Bruised soles can be really quick to go. Stones in feet can also make them really lame, then sound when they are removed. Hopefully it was that.

He is FINE yay such a relief...:) he had his bute last night as said :D went up this morning expecting him to be hopping but he walked out really well, still a bit tentative but all in all brilliant, he is a bit of a wuss (unlike his mum who had a very large abcess and farrier was amazed she hadnt been lame!!), But still very very worrying....farriers coming Monday so will ask him to have look, but hopefully no more vet intervention :D:D

Was speaking with somebody today who said the very same as you..hers would get a stone in his hoof and you'd think he'd broke his leg lost a shoe out riding and had to have him picked up he wouldnt budge!!

Thanks for asking :)

Glad your horse is feeling a bit better, but keep an eye on it for a few days anyway, bruising doesnt always settle down that quickly and you might get an abcess thrown up in a day or two if the stones punctured the sole.
Hopefully all will be fine
