Buying a horse with sarcoids

It's a calculated gamble, personally I wouldn't discount the horse outright - but whether I purchased or not would depend on a variety of factors.

personally I wouldn't touch with a bargepole - any horse can develop one but one with sarcoids is more likely to develop more and there is a theory that they could be spread by flies to other horses.

Maybe a slim chance but Not always as mentioned once mine was treated they never returned.

My vet told me that if they were removed and the horse had none at six, that he would be unlucky to develop any more as his immune system was then on top of it. Mine did develop another two after being stressed, which can apparently bring them back, but he has now been clear for over a year in spite of other stressful (for him, he's a bit speshul) events. I am, though, aware that the virus can lie dormant just like chicken pox, and reactivate any time the horse's immune system is weakened, just like people get shingles decades after chicken pox.

They wouldn't put me off buying the right horse unless they were near tack or on the face, but the price would have to reflect the potential for problems.

It would totally depend where they were / how many / what they looked like (how serious they looked). Ive had 3 who've had sarcoids, but only very few. One had one under his tail (on the underneath of his tail bone) and had 1 on his side however this one got angry one year so I put turmeric sudocrem on it and it healed up never to return, the other had 2 under the tail and they caused no issues, 3rd horse had one between front legs which got irritated by flies 2 years ago so I treated it with turmeric again and it disappeared and has not returned. So Ive not had bad experiences so far with sarcoids, perhaps Ive been lucky but 1 or 2 wouldnt put me off as long as they werent in the saddle area or somewhere they could rub. Like anything like this, it totally depends on your own experiences or what you've heard from others as to what your opinion is!

I've also never had any sarcoids spread to other horses (never heard of that) or found new ones appear on horses that didnt already have them when I bought them.

what did you decide to do OP did you buy the horse?
I declined. For a couple of reasons. One the risk, having lost one to neurological problems last year - vet came out to look at a swollen tendon, didn't like the way the horse moved and one month later after investigations he was pts :(

Two it took them so long to send the pictures of the sarcoids I've had to travel up north for work so couldn't have viewed for a month anyway
