Most horses I see messed up in training are because people shouldn’t have bought youngsters. They should have bought an older horse. Depends on your definition of messed up. I just don’t see that in ponies or horses that if they are 10+ years old they are messed up. If they have been doing the job well for someone they will do it for someone else. I spend a significant amount of time watching a lot of RC up to 5* eventing so see the whole gamut.
I think Gloi was talking about specifically about youngsters...I.e. a 4/5 yo that is completely unstarted is a much easier prospect than one that has been started badly

Fwiw I 100% agree. I have restarted 3 where the original backing didn't go to plan or left a lot of holes...never again if I can help it

Yes. One 4yo cob recently which was meant to have be just been sat on and turned away. Now suspicions are that it has been in harness at some point, probably as a 2yo, and had a mishap. It happens too often 🙁
