My pony excelled himself.
Arrived and MKEC had arranged it that we'd use the main outdoor arena for the dressage and the indoor arena for the sjing.
We had the mini outdoor to warm up in which worked well.
I was parked nice and central, bang in the middle, perfect.
Snoop warmed up nicely (9th) to go and popped over a couple of fences before continuing to warm up for his dressage.
He went in and produced a lovely test, although i thought the judge wasnt watching the final halt

Immediately you go into the indoor arena and you had two warm up fences before you jumped your round.
The fences were very close together but he popped the practise fences well and went on to start his round.
He jumped round really well, the course was a goo 1.05 throughout, with 3 related distances of 5, 4 and 3 strides, plus a very LONG one strided double.
He jumped beautifully round the first 5 fences, although rolled fence 4 which was unlucky.
Coming up to the final double/related distance (treble) he popped in nicely but just didnt have enough to get through on one so popped in 2 lowering the 2nd part of the double but kicked on to make the 3 and jumped the last huge!

Came out and quickly stripped the tack off and ran him up, he was abit reluctant to run, which is very unlike him but with a bit of encouragement he ran up nicely.

Back to the lorry he peed for England

poor love was desperate!

Went and checked on our scores we had 28 (out of 30) in the dressage
grin.gif
25 (out of 40) sjing
frown.gif
and 11 (out of 15) confirmation
smile.gif

We were 9th to go, and finished out of 40 horses a creditable 15th. We actually were 4th after the dressage alone with Michael Jackson, Angela Tucker and Tiny Clapham being the only combinations to get 29.

I was disappointed with our SJing mark as i felt he really tried for me, but it wasnt supposed to be. Virtually EVERYONE in the top 10 were Pros but i am pleased to say Snoopals managed to hold his own

Thanks for reading...

Well done V you must be so pleased. Are you going to do another one? Sounds like it would be well worth it.

Thanks Lec.
I was over the moon with his performance today. He really is all grown up now and very professional about it all.
YO wants us to head for Eridge next week but its miles, may try and get in to Gatcombe but again, think we are way out of depth with the amount of pros there. Interesting to note that Cotton King (BYEH 4year old winner last year and 2nd at the PAVO champs) who Angela Tucker rode, got 29 dressage and 29 sjing and she was clear in the sjing where as i lowered 2 and got 25. He did score 14 out of 15 for confirmation. I didnt see the final placings it was going on when we left.

Well done you. I'm just bringing on a 4yo and hoping to do some BYEH. could you direct me to a site that lists all the qualifiers- I've looked but cannot find. I'm thinking about Brockenhurst. I'm a real amateur but i've got a cracking young horse. i'm going for the experience really.

There you go sounds like you should definately do another one. The marks are usually pretty tight BYEH. I do not think half the time the judges know what they are looking for anyway - is it a hunter or a dressage pony or a proper competition horse!!
Oh look there is PF well whatever she rides when not hooking it will surely go 4* so give it some extra marks!! Oh yes there is SC not so good at the flatwork but ignore that because it will still get round badders with her riding!!

Personally I think they do it to add some money. Oh well its never got past novice but nevermind it won BYEH.

Here you go

forgot about Brokenhurst, and theres one near Badminton too.
Good luck, sounds ideal for your horse

It was a lot of fun today and its worth it for the competition exposure alone.

Lec that is completely right.
These are the judges guidlines

In the dressage phase, unlike a normal dressage test, we are not assessing the state of training and marks are not given for individual movements. Therefore the judge may watch from wherever he will get the best view. Three correct, elastic and regular gaits through a swinging back are what we are after. The Judge will have to weigh up the influence of the rider; a good rider may present a well balanced, smooth test from perhaps a moderate, unscopey horse while a novice rider may even hinder a good horse from showing its true worth. It is the horse's, and not the rider's real potential we are looking for. Trainability should also be taken into account.

In the jumping phase we are looking for a bold athletic horse with good technique and a horse with these qualities, should not necessarily be penalised for knocking down one fence (or a four year old having one refusal), providing he learns from his mistake. Four year olds may find it easier to jump out of trot.

The sjing annoys me because tbf to snoopy he is a bold as brass and took those fences on with boldness. Yes he found the one stride double difficult, but boy did he learn from hitting that fence and jump right into the air for the final fence!

I have just found a further 2 events we can go to, just gotta talk mum into going
grin.gif

Wow, Its such a shame about the jumping because from those photos it looks like he has serious potential! I suppose it doesnt matter, where you came as long as he tried!

Its nice to know hes not far off the Pros horses, and i guess had he been ridden by one of them he too may have been in the final line up?
Either way, was interesting to read the artical in H&H this week that, the horse that won the U25 at Bramham NEVER came anywhere at BYEH! so maybe snoopals has still got a chance

Well done, especially on the dressage part - absolutely super result. As for the jumping, well it just wasn't his day, but I am sure he will improve his score next time - hardly a shabby performance!

Perhaps, a professional rider would possibly help his cause. But you shouldnt be negative he really does look fab in those photos.

Yes I thought that comment was interesting too. We have a horse on our yard who is doing his first advanced in a few weeks time & is being consistently placed at intermediate & 2*. However the only reason the owner still has him, is that they brought him to do BYEH & then sell, but he performed so badly in the classes, they couldnt sell him so ended up keeping him. The judges just didnt like him, he was marked down in the conformation, as he was too gangly; didnt have the movement in the dressage and was a bit idle jumping.. Some horses just dont excel until they get that bit more mature, I suppose.

That's a very creditable result because as you say, it seems the professionals always seem to get the top places.
He looks really nice in the pic, and appears to have muscled up more from the last ones.
Sadly Jacques can't do any showing type classes, when he went away to be backed he must have leaned on the wall a lot and got a massive capped hock.
frown.gif

Had I visited I would probably have stuck a hock boot on him but that's just one of those things. It's only a cosmetic sort of injury and won't affect his performance.

I would deffo do another one of these comps with Snoops, he may just go a lot higher next time under different judges.

Thank you everyone.
HH thats a real shame about Jac and his cap hock, but as you say it is only cosmetic, and tbh if hes correct in every other way it might be worth taking him if you have any near you! for £20 its great comp experience.

Snoops looks really different because i clipped him this week. Looks more dun than glorious bright bay, but he was getting so hot just going for a hack. So no chance of doing fancy designs on is bum atm
frown.gif

Hes getting stronger all the time, and if beginning to find flat work very easy, where as before he did struggle or i he would expect ME to hold him
smirk.gif

Now if i could get to do some more sjing I may have a crack at a few more, all the BYEH classes are 60+ miles away seems along way for 10 minutes if our SJing isnt up to scratch.

That is an excellent result - particularly the dressage score!

We show jump at MK sometimes - that indoor school gets VERY tight when the fences get higher than about 90cm!!

(Did you worry about hitting the roof at all? Have never done it but it always crosses my mind when the jumps go up!)

Definitely worth another go at a qualifier.

I'm glad you made it there hon! Well done. Sounds like the dressage went well - it is annoying when the judge seems not to be looking at you, but he looks super in the picture. I'm glad that the dressage seems to be a breeze for him now! You should do some BD with him when the season is over.

The pros always are up there in the lineup; tis ever so (and it is especially the case in dressage YH classes), but you have done incredibly well with him - and I know that he has not been entirely easy. This is proof that you were right about him all along.

Well done again!
Hope you are feeling better as well.

Hey well done you, that sounds great! B did the one at Badminton with his breeder, seem to remember she came back saying much the same thing as LEC describes. He came 15th too, think it is difficult to break into the top flight unless you are a pro, so you should be very pleased.

Thanks guys.
Still buzzing after today. Im so proud of him.

SC might see you tomorrow, weather pending.......

SM, youre right, the last fence caused a fair few to really cat leap it, and now you come to mention it, there were a few who only just missed the rafters

Well done again!!

Would you come and ride Kiri for me one of these days? I need to learn how to ride dressage tests!!!

Think you should also come to Eridge next weekend - would be great to see Snoopy in action
smile.gif

BIG WELL DONE.......Sounds like Snoops held his own
smile.gif

Im at Eridge on Friday, entries closed 20th, are you going to try and get in?
