I am thinking of purchasing a myler for my horse as I have read many good things about them.
Firstly it would need to be BD legal.
I have ridden him in a happy mouth loose ring straight bar snaffle for a number of years as unfortunately he was in the wrong hands before I got him and had been 'strapped down' therefore he has had trouble to accept the contact and work into it, he prefers to suck back and sit behind the vertical without actually working over his back. I felt he was happier in the straight bar until I tried a sweet iron eggbut snaffle at the beginning of last year.
I'd spent so long sending him long and low in the straight bar that he was much stronger and now happier to work softly and be ridden 'up' a little more.
He is however resistant and not at all easy, he argues until he decides that you are allowed to win! He loves to work but he also loves to have the argument first!!
So I'm wondering whether a Myler might be worth a try?

I've had a look on the website but there seem to be so many different ones to choose from that I'm a little lost, and as they aren't particularly cheap I don't really want to find myself with a collection of them!!

If you google myler there's a few people that will let you try bits (but you still have postage costs/fee). Mine sounds similar to yours with the arguments! I've just been put him in loose ring myler after using a NS for last year. After initial strop he's going really nicely now. Most of the sites say which are dressage legal but worth a call to check as well.

Some places let you leave a deposit and try them - that's how I got mine. My horse goes really well in his - he's quite sensitive in his mouth and it takes quite a lot for him to accept the contact - I've tried loads of different bits in him and I found the Myler (comfort snaffle) was the best for being mild (he used to grind his teeth in a kind of stressy way) but he is still fairly responsive.

Thanks Moggy and Jumpthemoon, I will try and find somewhere that provides that service.
I tried a KK last summer too.... well I might as well have ridden in a headcollar!! I don't think he likes having too many links in his mouth.

the only mylers that are dressage legal are the 02 and 32 mouthpieces, i'm pretty sure.
i have both, with dressage-legal full-cheeks no hooks, which is my fave mouthpiece - gives total stability in the mouth. i use with keepers, always. the 02 is the wide-barrel comfort mouthpiece, a lovely bit. the 32 is the mullen, which has a tiny bit of flexion at the joint, but only about 1-2mm, it is much more like a straight bar, but you can use the sides independently. both would be worth a try with your lad, i'm sure.
i think i'm going to try to get hold of a few more so i can start lending them to people to try, without leaving myself with none! have 2 of the 02 mouthpiece at the mo, 1 of the 32. about to make a phone call...

I am a big fan of these too, the TBxID I had used to lean on the bit horribly, but accepted the Comfort Snaffle happily and worked well in it, and also went around a cross country course with complete control.

Well that narrows down my search and certainly makes more sense to me, thanks!
I think both of these may be worth a try (I will have to rely on the lady that is currently riding for me for her opinion!) as I'd definitely be interested in how he goes with the 32 mouthpiece. He was happy in the straight bar but I felt I needed to be able to use the different sides of him more efficiently!

Thanks to those that replied, I've been down to my local tack shop and they offer a trial service on the myler bits, so I have brought home a mullen mouth (32) snaffle as he does tend to play with bits. I'll see how he gets on and I might try the 02 mouthpiece as well!

Would that be ISC? If so I didn't know they did that, I might have to investigate, Patrick is currently in a happy mouth loosering straight bar too.

Yep..... not that I'll ever admit to being in their at lunchtime

I had to pay for the bit but it's £10 per week to hire it, so if I don't like it I can take it back and get £40 refunded.

ETS: When Osc was in the straight bar loose ring I just felt I needed to be able to talk to one side of him at times and it felt restricting. My friend and I were trying out the different feelings on our arms......

and there definitely is a difference!

I find the 32 very very effective with my ID. He seems to like the still feel & precise aid it gives, he's definately more accepting of the contact & settled in his mouth in it. The side movement really does help - he can be an expert at dropping out through the shoulders in most bits but not in the Mylers!
