Do any one else's hands get really dry and calloused from mucking out? My hubby complains that my hands are rougher then his, and he is right! I just wondered what hand creams people used to combat this, and how many times a day you apply it?
I'm not really a girlie girl, so I need help with these things

Best thing to do is use a scrub (a face or body one) and then slather on hand cream at every opportunity. The only really effective way to prevent the callouses though is to wear gloves!

Boots have a hand scrub callled Handluscious or something similar that smells of coconut. Very good for getting out ingrained dirt and smells.

To make them softer I am using Boots Soap and Glory Endless Glove handcream which seems pretty good. For a more industrial one Lotil cream is very good and cheap and very effective on cracked hands

The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector is brilliant. Its not cheap and doesn't smell too clever but it does the job. The Hemp Handwash is also great at getting your hands clean.

Yes, I get this every winter & sometimes I get splits on the ends of my thumb when its bad. I think its from washing my hands more often too.

I use Neutrogena hand cream, you can get it in the supermarket or Boots - it was developed for Norwegian fishermen, so should do the trick.

Also, remember to put on your Marigolds before washing-up as this really dries hands out. I also wear thick builders type rubber gloves at the yard.

umm... wearing gloves really helps! (not trying to be facetious here!) either rubber ones (although they can get a bit sweaty) or just a pair of cheap pimply riding ones.
or, there's a good product which coats your hands and protects them, goes on like foam and then disappears completely, Benchmark's DermaShield.
putting a thick coating of handcream on before going to sleep helps too.

Showa gloves are brilliant, they do thin ones with rubber palms that fit like a second skin and you can still do 'detailed' work with them, they do thermal ones and they do long rubber gloves unlike 'normal' rubber gloves, they are tough and last years

Style no 265 I wear for most jobs
Style no 620 are the rubber gloves

Would definitely definitely wear gloves as often as possible. And take off rings if poss as I find, even with gloves on, rings rub and cause callouses. I wear wooly gloves for mucking out, then put leather gloves over the top when picking out muddy feed, washing hooves etc so other gloves don't get wet. The leather gloves are cold, that's why I wear them over the top of wooly gloves.

I get some hand cream from local tack shop, can't remember what it's called but it's specially for riders, in a green tub, about £5 a pot, really creamy so don't use much and it lasts.

I have changed from rubber gloves to gardening gloves. I buy the cheap ones at about £ 3 a pair but they last for ages.

As soon as I get to the yard I cover my hands in Nettex - Working Hands barrier cream. It really keeps the grime away

A combination of these two has so far prevented the dreaded "splitty thumb" since the summer

I use those cheap rubbery garden gloves as well, about a £1 a pair in wilkinsons and then Neutrogena hand cream, it has SPF protection as well so keeps the wrinkles at bay..........I hope!

I notice that every winter when I start feeding my lot hard feed my hands get really dry and cracked. I think it's due to the sugar beet so I've started mixing my feeds up with a wooden spoon and my hands are now fine. I don't muck out as mine live out but would definitely suggest wearing gloves as often as poss.

There is a fantastic cream called skintex that is very cheap and I get it from a local chemist. It is fab for healing those vile tiny cracks that you get on your thumbs and fingers. Great for heels too!!
